Super Bowl LIV: J.Lo and Shakira to perform halftime show

Updated

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will headline next year's Super Bowl halftime show.

Shortly after both of the singers announced the news on social media on Thursday, the NFL confirmed the big reveal. Super Bowl LIV will take place at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Feb. 2, 2020.

"Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the Halftime Show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl," Lopez said in a statement. "And now it’s made even more special not only because it’s the NFL’s 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina. I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage."

"I’m so honored to be taking on one of the world’s biggest stages in the company of a fellow female artist to represent Latinos and Latinas from the U.S. and all over the world -- and to top it off, on my birthday!" Shakira said. "This is a true American dream and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!"

The confirmation comes months after rumors swirled that J.Lo would be performing during the coveted halftime show next year. In July, she told Entertainment Tonight that she'd "thought about" doing the show.

"Yeah, I've thought about the Super Bowl and it’s in Miami," she said at the time. "It’s a big deal, but we’ll see. They make their own decisions over there."

J.Lo will follow in the footsteps of recent Super Bowl Pepsi Halftime Show performers Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Bruno Mars.

Thursday's announcement continues a banner year in the three-decade career of Jennifer Lopez, who got engaged to Alex Rodriguez in March, went on a sold-out It's My Party tour in celebration of her 50th birthday and had the biggest box office opening of her career with "Hustlers" earlier this month.

The "Hustlers" role is also garnering her Oscars buzz, which could mean that one week after performing the Pepsi Halftime Show, she could be attending the 2020 Oscars as a nominee for the first time.
