Rachel Bilson 'mom-ing it pretty hard' as she says she's 'still figuring it out' work-wise (Exclusive)

Rachel Bilson is "still figuring it out" when it comes to her next major acting gig, but that's okay with her -- it means she's "mom'ing it pretty hard" with her daughter, Briar Rose, 4, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

AOL's Gibson Johns caught up with the former "Hart of Dixie" actress while she was promoting her Celebreaks campaign with La Marca Prosecco, where she opened up about how being a single mom impacts her work-life balance, why she savors breaks between projects and the "most important" thing she tells her daughter.

"I try not to focus on the stress of it," Bilson explained of being between roles. "I think it’s more important to be focused on the present and just make sure that your time is spent with your daughter in a positive way and not worrying about anything else or setting any sort of stress example for her."

"Work-wise I’m still figuring it out at the moment," she added. "I’m mom-ing it pretty hard."

That being said, when Bilson finds herself in the midst of a television show with long shooting hours or demanding schedules, she makes sure that she can still spend ample time with her daughter -- both by bringing her to set and by establishing parameters before she even signs on for the role.

"It’s pretty tricky in the business that I’m in, and the hours are really long. The good thing is that they all end, and then you have a copious amount of time to be a mom and I think that’s such a privilege that I get to have. It’s not a 9 to 5 every day that I have all year, but the hours when I’m working are hard," she explained. "I always make sure that she’s with me, she visits me at work and she’s on location, because being a mom is the most important thing to me. It always comes first, and I have to factor it in before I take any job."

Bilson described her 4-year-old as "very expressive with how she dresses," noting that she "loves matching" with her mom. She's also interested in karate, ballet and swimming -- "all of it!" as Bilson said -- and as Briar Rose continues to take on more activities and challenges, her actress mother has been making sure to impart on her a crucial lesson.

"It’s really interesting how you word things to a child. I’ll tell her I’m proud of her all the time, but more importantly I tell her, 'You should be proud of yourself,'" she explained. "That’s what I engrain in her and what’s so important so that she feels really good and confident. She’s a very confident girl and she’s pretty fearless, which I think is so awesome."
