This was Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s first red carpet appearance as a couple

Facebook launched, Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-synching on "SNL," and "Friends" came to an end: 2004 was a monumental year, to say the least.

It was also the year Prince William and Kate Middleton went public with their romance.

Another royal couple who made their debut? A then 23-year-old Beyoncé and 35-year-old Jay-Z stepped off a yacht into the 2004 MTV VMAs, held in Miami, for their first red carpet appearance together.

While Jay-Z made headlines for his head-to-toe white suit and fedora, all eyes were on Beyoncé's little gold number and blonde curls. The singer won the award for Best Female Video with "Naughty Girl," and gave Jay-Z  a shout-out during her speech saying, "What up, Jay?" -- ultimately confirming their romance after staying quiet for years.

Wackiest VMA Outfits

Earth to Gwen! Where to begin? The "No Doubt" frontwoman rocked a flippy, futuristic skirt over black pants in 1998. Fuzzy platforms matched her fuzzy blue bikini top, which coordinated with her ice blue 'do. Body jewels completed her very extraterrestrial ensemble.

Van Halen's David Lee Roth had some serious guts when he stepped out in a Hawaiian print suit with strings of leis in place of a shirt. Ultra-80s hair and then-girlfriend Sonia Braga completed his epic entrance to the 1984 VMAs after party at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Was going shirtless a thing? MC Hammer rocked his iconic harem pants in a blinding black and gold print. Sunnies (at night, of course) topped off the "Can't Touch This" singer's wild 1990 ensemble.

Woah, there, Carmen Electra! The "Baywatch" babe left little to the imagination in 1997 when she donned a slinky black dress that left her entire side exposed.

Busta Rhymes never holds back when it comes to fashion, and the 1997 VMAs were no exception. The rapper rocked a floor-length vest atop red pleated pants and matching shoes. A wild Basquiat-esque 'do was just the icing on the cake.

Who can forget this iconic 1998 look? Rose McGowan took "sexy" a little too far in halter "dress" comprised of beaded strings and a G-string to match.

For Prince's 1999 VMAs look, it was all in the accessories. Nevermind the royal blue jumpsuit and matching tips, the "Kiss" singer's gold necklace, gold belly chain and gold hoop earring really stole the show!

Jenny from the block was totally bright-eyed at the 2001 awards show in a fab printed chiffon top, thigh high black boots and a floppy hat.

Leave it to Macy Gray to get away with this wacky look! The "I Try" singer promoted her upcoming album on her purple gown with pink lace sleeves and a silver, embroidered cabbie hat to match.

MTV queen Christina Aguilera flaunted her enviable bod when she rocked a teeny denim mini, sexy scarf "shirt" and her signature skunk locks.

The spotlight was totally Lady Gaga's to nab. In 2009, the "Bad Romance" singer rocked a lace mini dress that ran from the top of her head to her fingertips and a red crown to match!

Lady Gaga was at it again one year later and repulsed those in her vicinity in a dress made entirely of meat. Meat shoes and a meat hat completed her jaw-dropping look that had people talking for months.

We're not sure what Nicki Minaj was aiming for in 2012 with her lace bodysuit and driving cap. And her sunny yellow mop throws us completely for a loop.

Miley Cyrus became the queen of the MTV VMAs after her wild antics at the 2013 show. An unconventional awards show choice, indeed, the "We Can't Stop" singer rocked a fuzzy leotard with a bear's face, spurring tons of Halloween copycats two months later.

Riff Raff and Katy Perry must have been channeling Britney and Justin's iconic 2001 American Music Awards look, but the denim-on-denim wasn't fab then, and it definitely wasn't in 2014.
