Billie Eilish stops Lil Nas X's streak at number one

Updated

After 9 weeks of being a spurs-length away from Lil Nas X and "Old Town Road," Billie Eilish has officially booted the record-breaking hit from the top spot with "bad guy." Duh.

"Congratulations to Billie Eilish!," the viral sensation immediately wrote after the news broke Monday afternoon. "U deserve this!" He followed it with a meme of Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants begging for change, commenting, "me when Columbia drop me from the label because Billie Eilish took the number 1 spot."

"Old Town Road" spent 19 weeks at number one, becoming the longest running number one in history.

The weird and winding trip for "Old Town Road" won't be soon forgotten, with remixes of remixes, an epic ascent to the top, and ultimately a record-shattering stay at number one. What was once a Country chart reject became a ubiquitous anthem, enjoyed by people six to sixty. Lil Nas X harnessed the power of social media and turned this SoundCloud standout into a piece of history.

For Billie Eilish, dethroning the King of the charts is just the latest victory for the 17-year-old singer. Earlier this year she became the first person born in the 2000s to top the album chart, she has two of the top-selling vinyl releases of the year, and she is only 1 of 3 women to top the Alternative charts twice on her own. The script was set for the young fighter to come up through the ranks, and after 9 weeks she finally connected on a knockout round. The "bad guy" reigns, as "Old Town Road" retires to the ranch.

"This is the first week in 5 months old town road hasn't been number 1," Lil Nas X wrote on Instagram. "This journey had taught me so much! Can't wait for y'all to see what's next."
