Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's split: Details emerge on what led to their separation (reports)

More details have emerged on Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's shocking split, shedding light on the situation involving Kaitlynn Carter and ex Brody Jenner.

Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their split on Saturday night, just eight months after tying the knot last Christmas. That same night, photos emerged of Cyrus cozying up to Carter while on a girls' trip in Lake Como, Italy. The double-whammy was the talk of the internet, but it was a slew of feisty Instagram comments between Cyrus, Jenner and his "The Hills" co-star Brandon Lee posted last this past weekend that left us with more questions than answers.

Several new reports, all of which cite unnamed sources, claim that Cyrus and Carter are indeed "seeing each other" and have been for "a couple of months."

That being said, TMZ's sources told the outlet that they "didn't start [hooking up] until they had both broken up with their spouses." In fact, even though their split just became public over the weekend, Miley and Liam have been separated for "months," with Hemsworth spotted without his wedding ring on as long ago as June, nearly two months ago.

The outlet notes that Cyrus made a "valiant attempt" to fix her crumbling marriage to Hemsworth, pushing them to go to couples therapy and taking "other steps to make their marriage work." Despite her efforts, Hemsworth "didn't come close to meeting her half way," so it "became apparent a while ago it wasn't going to work and they drifted apart."

The former "The Last Song" co-stars have reportedly known Jenner and Carter "for years," with both couples becoming close while living in Malibu. It was last year's wildfires that pushed them "even closer" together."

As for Jenner's split from Carter, which was announced just last week, as well, insiders told Page Six that "there's no drama" between them and that the "The Hills" cast member is "still friends" with Cyrus and Carter.

The sources told Page Six that Carter "had some other priorities" when it came to her marriage "and you now know what they are," though it was unclear exactly what the insider was alluding to. The source added that "Brody wants his ex to be happy and he's friends with Miley," adding that Miley's viral comment -- which had been read as slamming Jenner -- was actually made "in jest."

On Sunday, Cyrus took to Instagram to cryptically share her side of the story the morning after her rep confirmed that she and Hemsworth were separating.

"Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win," she wrote in part. "My dad always told me 'Nature never hurries but it is always on time'.... it fills my heart with peace and hope KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own ...."

Meanwhile, Hemsworth broke his own silence on his split when the Daily Mail Australia approached him during a frozen yogurt outing with his brother, Chris, in Australia.

"You don't understand what it's like," he reportedly said. "I don't want to talk about it, mate."

Both of their comments followed an aforementioned joint statement from Cyrus' rep.

"Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," the statement said. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."
