'The Politician' to skewer Jared Kushner's acceptance into Harvard: 'He didn't belong there'

Updated

Ryan Murphy's upcoming Netflix show, "The Politician," will take inspiration from Jared Kushner.

In The Hollywood Reporter's latest cover story, Murphy and the rest of the show's cast and creators, including Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, Brad Falchuk, open up about the highly-anticipated series, which features a storyline that calls to mind the recent college admissions scandal.

In the show's premiere, its central character, played by Platt, finds out that he was wait-listed at Harvard, despite the fact that his older brothers attended the prestigious university.

"Well," Paltrow, who plays his adoptive mother, responds. "Your father and I bought their way in."

Though the line was actually written before Operation Varsity Blues, which is expected to result in jail time for Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin and a slew of other powerful people who allegedly paid for their children to get into universities, the show did take inspiration from the reports that Jared Kushner's father donated $2.5 million to Harvard before Jared's acceptance.

"This guy was walking around with the pride of being a Harvard graduate, and the reality was that he didn't belong there," co-creator Falchuk explained to THR. "I said, 'We've got to tell that story.'"

As Murphy further said, the show ultimately serves as a takedown of the abuse of generational wealth and privilege in the United States, for which he took immense inspiration from the Trump family.

"It's wealthy people behaving badly," Murphy said of his latest project. "All of this has been percolating in the culture, particularly under this president and this idea of Ivanka and Jared [as] the sort of satanic poster boy and girl for privilege and nepotism."

Ian Brennan, another one of the series' co-creators, sounded off on the admissions scandal in the cover story, as well.

"I want to slap every one of those people because nobody took my SATs for me," he exclaimed. "It's such a gross thing and it drives me f--king nuts. It is about the ugliest thing that someone of means can do, and it's not a good look for this town."

While Murphy had never worked with Huffman or Loughlin, the story notes that "he does consider [Huffman] a friend," and he said that he does "understand" why they reportedly did what they did.

"It's a sensitive thing," the father of two said. "Do I agree with what they did? No. Do I understand what they did? Yes. I think it's all out of a love of your child, and I think that the system has gone so crazy. I have always liked [Huffman] -- and I believe in redemption and in second chances."
