Colbert checks in on Trump after the Democratic debates (Video)
On Thursday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert looked back on the Democratic primary debates, and checked in on what Donald Trump’s been up to.
First, about the debates: “It’s 20 people, and if I’m generous, six of them should be up there. I’m looking at you Steve Bullock. I think, could be Michael Bennett, it’s hard to tell,” Colbert joked.
From there, Colbert noted that the debates were mostly about the various candidates piling on each other instead of talking about Donald Trump. “But you know who has the courage to talk about Donald Trump? Donald Trump,” Colbert said, changing the subject to the rally Trump held Thursday night in Cincinnati.
Colbert noted that it’s Trump’s first rally since the one where the audience chanted “send her back,” referring to congresswoman Ilhan Omar, referencing a Trump tweet in which he said Reps. Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should “go back” to the countries of their ethnic origins.
Colbert then played news footage in which Trump was repeatedly cagey about whether or not he’d stop the Cincinnati crowd if they began similar chants. At one point, Trump said he didn’t even think he could stop them.
“I mean, what are you gonna do,” Colbert said in his Trump imitation voice. “Tell my whole audience to go back where they came from? That’s not what America’s about folks.”
