Sandra Bullock to her children: 'Sometimes you’re born into a family, sometimes you need to go find it'

There were thousands of eyes on her, but Sandra Bullock spoke directly to just two people while onstage at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which aired on Monday night.

Bullock, 54, used her few minutes in the spotlight to deliver a message to her children, 9-year-old Louis and 7-year-old Laila. Both kids were adopted; Louis in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Laila, also from Louisiana, out of foster care a few years later. Her experience as a mother led her to take the starring role in "Bird Box," the Netflix film for which she took home a statue this weekend.

“I wanted you to see what being a family looks like, that sometimes you’re born into a family, sometimes you need to go find it, sometimes it finds you," Bullock said, addressing her two kids.

She continued, "But no matter how it comes together, that when it does, family is what you fight for, family is what you protect and what you saw in that movie is what your mommy would do for you."

The actress then told her kids that "no matter what, you are my first thought in the morning, you are my last thought at night. I was put on this earth to protect you, you are my world, I love you so much, and I will move mountains to make sure that you are safe."

The sweet speech drew cheers and some tears from the crowd.

Bullock has become a vocal advocate for adoption, telling fellow adoptive mom Hoda Kotb in 2018 that the moment she saw Louis, she knew it was right.

"I looked at [Louis], and I just said, 'Oh, there you are.' It's like he had always been there," she said.
