'Jeopardy!' fans in uproar after news reports spoil next James Holzhauer episode: 'I never knew I would be so angry'

Now that’s a spoiler.

Some high-profile newspapers were just too excited about Monday’s episode of Jeopardy! to keep it to themselves. Both the Washington Post and the New York Times reported on what happened during the episode when long-running champion James Holzhauer found himself on the brink of breaking yet another record on the Alex Trebek-hosted game show.

Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler from Las Vegas, has won an average of nearly $77,000 per episode on Jeopardy!, thanks to his quick way with the buzzer and his seemingly endless knowledge of most every category. Literature, science, geography, word play — Holzhauer has been firing back answers in all of those categories over 32 games, in which he’s won more than $2.4 million.

Holzhauer needed $58,485 more to break the record $2.5 million that Ken Jennings, the most successful contestant in Jeopardy! history, won over 74 games in 2004. Did he get it? We’re not going to tell you here, but the national newspapers chose to do so, noting that the syndicated game show airs in the morning in some cities. (The Post confirmed with a worker at one of the affiliates that shows the episode at 9:30 a.m. Central that leaked footage of Monday’s episode posted to the internet was real.)

A commenter on the Post story said that it was featured in the publication’s daily newsletter, which meant he couldn’t avoid it.

Another Jeopardy! fan complained, “Great thanks hasn’t even aired yet.”

Twitter was that facepalm emoji in real life.

Over at the Times, a reader complained about the lack of “editorial discretion,” although the story was headlined, “What Is a Spoiler? This Story About ‘Jeopardy!’ Phenom James Holzhauer.”

The Post headline was labeled as a “SPOILER,” although the truth is that a story about the show at this moment is likely to be news about Holzhauer (setting or missing the record) or Trebek, who’s undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, which he revealed that he’s been diagnosed with in February.

Although, Trebek said just last week that, so far, the treatment is working. Some of his tumors have shrunk more than 50 percent.
