Tom Hanks to co-anchor 'Today' show with Savannah Guthrie on May 23

Tom Hanks is heading to the small screen.

The Oscar winner has signed on to co-host an hour of NBC's "Today" on Thursday, May 23, alongside daily anchor Savannah Guthrie. The pair will broadcast live at 8:00 a.m. from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Guthrie and Hanks will chat -- and likely serve up a few surprises -- with military caregivers in support of Sen. Elizabeth Dole's Hidden Heroes organization. The broadcast will also serve as a tease for NBC's coverage of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 26.

After Craig Melvin pointed out that the co-hosting gig would be a first for Hanks, Guthrie said, "I hope he's practicing."

"We're gonna be surrounded by incredible veterans, their remarkable caregivers and loved ones," Guthrie said of the special program. "We're gonna tell you their stories."

Al Roker will join Guthrie and Hanks for the show, but absent will be Guthrie's usual co-anchor Hoda Kotb. She remains out on maternity leave and hasn't yet confirmed when she'll return to the show.

The May 23 broadcast will also feature a live performance from country singer Sheryl Crow.
