Norah O’Donnell named anchor of ‘CBS Evening News’ as Gayle King addresses rumors of bad blood

It's a "new era" for CBS News.

The network shook up its news coverage on Monday, announcing that Norah O’Donnell will become anchor and managing editor of “CBS Evening News” this summer.

O’Donnell has been a co-host of “CBS This Morning” along with Gayle King and John Dickerson.

“Walter Cronkite once said, ‘I can’t imagine a person becoming a success who doesn’t give this game of life everything he’s got,’” O’Donnell tweeted Monday. “I am going to give this everything I’ve got.”

O’Donnell had been chief White House correspondent before she joined “CBS This Morning” in 2012. “CBS Evening News” will move to Washington from New York to focus more on stories from “the center of power.”

“This is the start of a new era for CBS News,” CBS News president Susan Zirinsky said in a statement. “Our job is to reveal America to itself through original reporting, strong investigative journalism and powerful political coverage.”

King, who recently nabbed a high-profile interview with R. Kelly, will remain co-host of “CBS This Morning” and will be joined by Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil. She addressed rumors of supposed bad blood between her and O’Donnell.

“It’s so amazing that after seven years together that now people would say you and I have beef,” King said on the air on Monday, according to Oprah Magazine. “You have no beef with me, I have no beef with you. Tina Brown summed it up nicely saying this doesn’t happen to men. This kind of cutt-hroat business. That the reality is that it’s two great jobs for two great women.”

O’Donnell is replacing Jeff Glor as anchor of the “CBS Evening News.” Glor is still negotiating his future with the network.

Dickerson, who joined “CBS This Morning” as Charlie Rose’s replacement in January of 2018, will become a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” Rose was axed after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced.
