New father Prince Harry speaks to press hours after Meghan Markle gives birth: 'I'm just over the moon'

Hours after the birth of his first child, new dad Prince Harry told press he's "just over the moon."

The 34-year-old royal could hardly stop smiling Monday morning as he confirmed that he and wife Meghan Markle welcomed a baby boy: "A very healthy boy," he added. "Mother and baby are doing incredibly well."

Noting with a laugh that he hasn't "been at many births; this is definitely my first birth," Prince Harry called the big day "the most amazing experience I could ever possibly imagine. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension."

The couple, who wed in May 2018, hadn't yet decided on a name by the time Harry spoke to reporters. "Still thinking about names," he said. "The baby's a little overdue so we've had some time to think about it." That will be all squared away by mid-week, he said, when the family of three makes their first official public appearance.

"As every father and parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing," Harry said, "but this little thing is absolutely to die for. So I'm just over the moon."

Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, also shared a statement through the palace: She's "overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild" and is currently with the new parents at their Frogmore Cottage home.

The firstborn child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is seventh in line for the British throne. Harry himself is sixth in line.

Meghan said earlier this year that she and Harry had opted not to learn the baby's gender in advance of his or her arrival.

"We don't know," she told an attendee at a February event. "Yes, we decided to keep it a secret."
