Princess Diana recounted 'unbearable' pressure of giving birth to a royal baby

Princess Diana felt "unbearable" pressure when giving birth to her sons in the public eye.

As revealed by Andrew Morton in his book, "Diana: Her True Story," and excerpted in People, the late princess felt the millions of eyes on her every move in 1982 leading up to the summer birth of her first child, Prince William. So much so, in fact, that she needed to be induced.

Finding a date to give birth, though, proved to be a bit difficult.

"When we had William, we had to find a date in the diary that suited Charles and his polo," Diana wrote in her diaries. "William had to be induced because I couldn’t handle the press pressure any longer, it was becoming unbearable. It was as if everyone was monitoring every day for me."

The date they chose turned out to be June 21, 1982 -- a Monday. Diana recalled the overjoyed response to her first child's arrival, and sarcastically proclaimed her gratitude to her husband for finding time in his busy polo schedule to be there for the birth.

"Anyway, the boy arrived, great excitement," she recounted. "Thrilled, everyone absolutely high as a kite -- we had found a date where Charles could get off his polo pony for me to give birth. That was very nice, felt grateful about that!"

Over two years later, Diana and Charles would welcome a second son together, Prince Harry, on September 15, 1984. Also in her diaries, the late mother of two recalled the "disappointment" that her husband felt when their second child wasn't a girl, as he desperately wanted a daughter.

"I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan," she explained. "Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy, and I didn’t tell him."

When Diana gave birth to Harry at St. Mary's Hospital's Lindo Wing, her husband apparently barely attempted to conceal his alleged disappointment.

"First comment was: 'Oh God, it's a boy," Diana wrote. "Second comment: 'And he's even got red hair.'"

Diana and Charles would later get divorced in 1996, the year before Diana died in a tragic car accident in Paris.
