How Katie Holmes has kept birthday girl Suri, 13, from becoming 'spoiled'

Down to earth!Katie Holmes‘ daughter, Suri, turns 13 years old on Thursday, April 18, and the actress has done her best to keep the teenager from becoming a “spoiled” celebrity child.

“Suri is a great kid,” a source who has worked with the Dawson’s Creek alum, 40, tells Us Weekly exclusively. “She is so sweet and well-mannered. She’s extremely polite and respectful. She’s just a good girl who is a joy to be around. Katie has done things right with her because she’s very grounded and down to earth. She doesn’t come across as spoiled or like a celebrity kid at all. She’s kind and she always shows gratitude.”

Part of this, according to the insider, is because the Ray Donovan star has made a point “to travel with her [daughter] on commercial planes and not travel private.”

“She’s a normal tween,” the source adds. “She loves pop music and fashion and hanging out with her friends. She’s into ballet and dancing. That’s one of her favorite hobbies. She’s curious and loves to learn. She does well in school.”

Holmes also stresses the importance of family in the teenager’s life.

“Suri has grown up spending a lot of time with Katie’s family in Ohio, and she’s close to her grandparents and aunts,” the source tells Us. “They are a close-knit family and have done everything they can to be there for her and to help with her upbringing.”

Last month, the mother-daughter pair visited a refugee camp in Greece where Suri was photographed playing with a younger child. She looked just like her dad, Tom Cruise, with a white tee, braids and a big smile.

Holmes and the Top Gun actor, 56, tied the knot in 2006, welcomed Suri that same year and divorced in 2012. The actress has been linked to Jamie Foxx since 2013.
