'Mary Tyler Moore Show' star Georgia Engel dead at 70

Georgia Engel, an acclaimed film, television and stage actress best known for her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, died on Friday, The New York Times reports.

The actress, known for her distinctive, high-pitched voice, was 70 years old. The NYT cites the actress' friend and executor, John Quilty, in stating that Engel's cause of death is "undetermined because Ms. Engel, who was a Christian Scientist, did not consult doctors."

A five-time Emmy nominee, Engel joined The Mary Tyler Moore Show in its third season in 1972 and was twice nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Georgette Franklin Baxter, the slightly ditzy love interest of Mary's grouchy boss, Ted Baxter (Ted Knight). She also had recurring roles on shows like Coach and Everybody Loves Raymond, the latter of which landed her three consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

The Washington D.C.-born actress' resume also included several acclaimed stage roles, including her performance as Ms. Tottendale in the original Broadway cast of The Drowsy Chaperone. She most recently appeared as Sister Barbara on Netflix's One Day at a Time.

Engel co-starred with Betty White on The Mary Tyler Moore show and later, on White's own eponymous sitcom, as well as her TV Land comedy Hot in Cleveland. “Georgia was one of a kind and the absolute best,” White told the NYT through a spokeswoman on Monday.
