Adam Sandler is returning to 'Saturday Night Live' to host for the very first time

Nearly 25 years after his departure from "Saturday Night Live," Adam Sandler will make his hosting debut.

Sandler will host "SNL" for his very first time on May 4, where he'll be joined by musical guest Shawn Mendes.

The comic, first hired as a writer in 1990 before performing in the cast from '91 to '95, is one of the sketch show's most successful alums of all time. After exiting "SNL," he wrote and starred in some of the biggest comedies of the decade, including "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore," "The Waterboy" and "Big Daddy."

In 2018, Sandler released a well-received stand-up special, "100% Fresh," which included a tribute song to the late Chris Farley, with whom he co-starred on "SNL."

While still regularly releasing comedies over the past two decades, Sandler received positive reviews in more complex roles in films like 2009's "Funny People" and 2017's "The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected."

He also appeared alongside Andy Samberg in a musical number for the starry 40th anniversary episode of "SNL."

Executive producer Lorne Michaels said Sandler's return will make for a "special night."
