Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Chicago prosecutors 'better get their stories straight' on Jussie Smollett

Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, who will exit his position in May after eight years in office, said Wednesday on "Good Morning America" that state prosecutors should clarify their decision to drop all 16 charges against "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett.

“You have the state’s attorney’s office saying he’s not exonerated, he actually did commit this hoax. He’s saying he’s innocent and his words are true — they better get their stories straight,” Emanuel said.

Although he did not call for a formal investigation into the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Emanuel said that the optics of the situation are confusing and alarming: "This is actually making a fool of all of us."

While Smollett emphasized his innocence on Tuesday, according to First Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Joseph Magats said Tuesday that dropping the charges did not exonerate or vindicate the actor.

“I do not believe he is innocent,” Magats told CBS News, clarifying that, "yes," he believes Smollett is guilty.

“Our priority is violent crimes and the drivers of violence. Jussie Smollett is neither one of those," Magats said.

But for Emmanuel, questions still abound.

“This looks like because he’s an actor, a person of influence, he got treated differently than anybody else,” Emmanuel said.

When the news was first made public Tuesday, Emanuel called the decision a "whitewash of justice."

In response to outrage from Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, one of Smollett's lawyers pushed back on suggestions that political favors were called in on the actor's behalf.

"No one political called that I know of," attorney Patricia Brown Holmes told CNN.

Instead, Holmes claimed that the mayor is angry because he "didn't communicate or have communications with the state's attorneys."
