Kate Bosworth notes 'critically important' move she ignored as a young actress (Exclusive)

Kate Bosworth is celebrating International Women's Day by paying it forward.

When the actress, who has been working Hollywood for over two decades now, was finding her footing in the film industry, she eschewed the help of any women that came before her out of self-admitted pride, but she wants women to know now that female mentorship is one of the most powerful tools at a woman's disposal.

In partnership with Women In Film and Chloe Wine Collection, Bosworth is offering female filmmakers the opportunity to receive $10,000 in cash to fund projects by submitting a short film or film excerpt to the She Directed contest.

To hear about her experience as a woman in Hollywood, whether or not she's seeing real change as a result of the #MeToo movement and the She Directed campaign, AOL caught up with Kate Bosworth over e-mail. See what she had to say below:

The past year or so has been pretty revolutionary for women in Hollywood. Do you feel that female filmmakers are truly starting to see the long-term effects of the #MeToo movement?

I believe we have more work to do certainly, but that we will not go backwards and that is a very inspirational notion. We have united and we are committed to putting women at the center of stories and focusing on more female directed pieces. The film industry is challenged by gender disparity -- women account for only a small fraction of directors. It’s important to support women in the director’s chair and increase the opportunities for female filmmakers.

In what ways have your personal on-set experiences with female directors differed from working with male directors?

I honestly aim to work with good directors. Ones with vision, integrity and intelligence. The movies I want to make and that I am most drawn to are the ones that have females at the center of them. My husband Michael Polish is one of the most inclusive directors I know. He is constantly generating stories, putting both women and minorities at the center of them.

Most recently, with our movie "Nona," which Michael wrote, directed and shot, is about a young girl from Honduras who is looking for a better life in America. Through her journey, she sadly gets sold into sex trafficking. This was a case where Michael recognized there is not enough attention on human trafficking and he literally put pen to paper to try and acknowledge this serious global epidemic through his artistic voice. I self-financed the movie and executive produced it with him. We cast a relatively unknown Latina girl named Sulem Calderon as the lead -- and the entire movie is in Spanish. We have to lean in from all sides -- both gender and ethnicity -- to create more interesting and diverse stories. With "Nona," we hope to change the way we look at human trafficking through an authentic narrative piece.

Reflecting on two decades in the industry, what advice would you give young women just beginning their careers in Hollywood?

Find a mentor. I wish I had, but I was too shy or too proud or too insecure to think that anyone would want to spend their valuable time on me. That simply is not the case. Now that I have over 20 years of experience in this industry, mentoring has become critically important to me. There are extreme growing pains you will experience in this industry, finding a mentor to guide you can make the experience a healthier and less fearful one.

How will you be recognizing International Women's Day this year?

In the lead up to International Women’s Day, I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Chloe Wine Collection and Women In Film to announce She Directed, a contest to recognize and reward female filmmakers who are putting women at the center of the story. I’m also proud to announce that "Nona" will be released VOD March 19. Over 75 % victims of human trafficking are women, [and] we hope by releasing the movie in March -- Women’s History Month -- will help shine a light on these significant statistics.

What can viewers expect from The I-Land?

ton of mystery … I’m not allowed to give too much away, but this show is one entertaining question mark!

Happy women’s day! I feel so blessed that I got to grow up surrounded by six incredible women: my mom, and my five sisters. We are all so different, but we complement one another, and we help each other grow! As women we are naturally empathetic, loving and caring. We nurture life! Today and every day, I celebrate all women. Let’s support and lift each other up! We are stronger when we are together. Nós nutrimos a vida! Hoje e todos os dias, celebro as mulheres. Vamos apoiar umas às outras! Somos mais fortes quando estamos juntas.

To mark #IWD2019 and 30 yrs of @womankindworldwide, I'm calling on governments to fulfil their commitments to protect women’s rights activists around the world. Now is the time to stand with women’s movements like never before! Shout out to all the incredible women around the world and fighting for change. I love you. Link in bio 💕
For #internationalwomensday, I'm issuing you a challenge. We know that when women run for office, they're elected at the same rate as men. But not as many women run as men, often because people don't ask women to run as often as they ask men.⁣ ⁣ My challenge for you is this. Think of a woman you know who should run for office. Then take a moment today to ask her to do it. Tell her she'll have help from @emergeamerica, @emilys_list, @runforsomethingnow, and you. With one question, you could start something pretty big.
Last night I had the supreme pleasure, along with Jane Walker by @JohnnieWalkerUS, of having an important and powerful conversation about women. And I got to do so alongside some of my #sheroes! Vanity Fair deputy editor of The Hive Claire Landsbaum, Axios’ new CTO Jess Szmajda (hey women in tech!), Sophie Kelly, Senior VP of North American Whiskeys at Diageo + ultimate ladyboss, and my bestie and business partner in #DetroitBlows, Nia Batts. We laughed a lot, I cried once (only once, that’s impressive!) and we all shared the highs and lows of our own adventures in kicking down doors to take our seats at the table of business and leadership. It was incredible. • I will always fight for gender equality and parity, and I am proud to partner with a brand who stands for — and pushes forward! — progress. I’m truly grateful to this team for hosting my dream panel with me. At the New York Historical Society, no less!? Swoon. Plus they make a damn good whiskey, so afterward cheers were had! This International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate how far we’ve come, and gear up for the journey ahead. Let’s #WalkWithJane #ad
On International Women's Day, I want us all to take one moment to pause and reflect on all of the magnificent women that brought us to life and fought for our freedom of speech and equality. I grow prouder every day in my womanhood and pay respect to all those that came before me, those that inspire today and the women of tomorrow. Shine and let your light lift you to your rightful place x #InternationalWomensDay #StellasWorld #iwd2019
Stand up for each other 🖤#InternationalWomensDay
Happy International Women’s Day. I’m often told I have masculine energy 😂 but it must also be feminine energy, just not a version that fits within the boring parameters society constructed to keep us all apart. Spill over the edges of how they expect/prefer you to behave without apology. Bla bla sending love x 📷 @katebellm
My 12 year old self is so thankful for having kind, loving and inspiring women closest to me. When I grow up, I want to be like so many of you! Here’s to all the girls and ladies on #internationalwomensday #iwd2019
Women matter. Women matter equally. #InternationalWomensDay
Got an early start to #internationalwomensday by going Live with @marsaimartin on my Facebook profile. At 14-years-old, she plays Diane Johnson on @blackishabc and is the youngest executive producer in Hollywood history. Her movie Little comes out next month. Marsai is proof that great things happen when we listen to the voices of young women - and that you’re never too young to dream big.
#girlpower 🖤💗 ❤️ #internationalwomensday
In honor of Women’s History Month, Jane Walker by @JohnnieWalkerUS #ad has unveiled Signs of Progress at the New-York Historical Society, a beautiful installation that encompasses the optimism and unity of a powerful and enduring movement. @sophiabush and I were so proud to be there for the unveiling @nyhistory, and stand with friends and partners that continue to celebrate and champion women who inspire change. • The exhibit is up until the end of March — if you’re in New York, take a few moments to stand in that atrium. We need all it’s energy. There’s still much work to do. 💪 #WalkWithJane #internationalwomensday
