Twitter is freaking out over this photo of Lady Gaga and Madonna posing together after the Oscars

What happens when two boundary-pushing pop queens of different generations come together in one photo? Twitter freaks out, naturally.

That's what happened on Monday morning when a photo from Guy Oseary and Madonna's annual Oscars after-party, "The Party," from Sunday night started to circulate on social media. The photo in question, taken by photographer JR, comes from the party's photo booth, which had a background made from crumpled white paper, and shows Madonna embracing Lady Gaga, who is holding her newly-won Academy Award.

Because the party has a strict no social media rule, fans didn't even know that Gaga had attended Madonna's star-studded affair. The "A Star Is Born" actress wore her second all-black look of the evening, with her hair in an Old Hollywood-style updo. Madonna opted for an off-white satin garment that she donned with a lavish gold-and-diamond headpiece and tons of other jewelry.

Many consider Madonna to be the star that paved the way for Lady Gaga, both of whom have exhibited an extraordinary ability to reinvent themselves time and time again. They're so often compared that there has long been speculation that the two are rivals, rather than friends -- and, indeed, they did have a slight war of words over the years.

After Gaga was accused of ripping off Madonna's 1989 hit "Express Yourself" with her 2011 song, "Born This Way," Madonna called Gaga's song "reductive."

Years later, in her Netflix documentary, "Gaga: Five Foot Two," the younger star responded to the icon's diss.

"She wouldn't look me in the eye and tell me that I was reductive," she said."Telling me you think I'm a piece of sh-t through the media? It's like a guy passing me a note through his friend."

Despite their rocky past, though, the photo taken on Sunday night assured fans that there's nothing but support between the two trailblazing women at this point. In other words, consider the hatchet buried.

"Shaken to my very core," one fan wrote of the photo.

"It took me a minute to realize this wasn't FAKE," another shocked fan reacted.

"So much going on in this photo of Madonna and Gaga from last night," another user said.

"Can we end the Gaga vs Madonna Stan Wars now?" another fan of both singers asked.

Madonna's after-party wasn't the only post-Oscars bash in town: The Vanity Fair Oscars Party brought together more of the industry's top talent for an overwhelmingly celeb-filled event.
