How Elizabeth Taylor got ready for the Oscars

Ever wonder how an icon like Elizabeth Taylor got ready for the Oscars?

AOL caught up with the House of Taylor right before the 91st Academy Awards to learn how the five-time Oscar nominee prepped for the big day. From the beauty to the dresses (did you know she was born with two sets of eyelashes?!) and her ten minute baths, we're breaking down everything that lead to Taylor's most legendary Academy Awards looks.

"Elizabeth would usually begin by identifying the jewelry she wanted to wear for the occasion. The color and cut of the gown, makeup and hair styles would be based on the jewelry to create a coordinated ensemble," a rep for House of Taylor noted.

"Once Elizabeth had decided on her jewelry, we would reach out to the designer she wanted to work with. Dior, Halston and Valentino were particular favorites. In working with the designers, she usually had her own ideas, as she was very artistic and loved the creative process. She would be vocal about her specific requests for the gown, but this was always spoken with respect for the designer and their artistry. After the initial consultation, the designer would generally send four or five sketches. She would work from there, sharing notes and feedback."

For the 1970 Oscars Taylor wore a periwinkle gown by Edith Head, where she took the stage to present the award for Best Picture. But perhaps the most notable part of her look was the 69 carat Cartier necklace that Richard Burton bought for her.

"Richard Burton had bought Elizabeth the 69 carat Taylor-Burton diamond in November 1969, and the 1970 Academy Awards Show was her first opportunity to show it off. The gown was perfectly cut to fit the diamond in its new setting, a dazzling Cartier necklace," House of Taylor told AOL.

"When it came to the event day, her beauty routine was pretty consistent. She did not have an elaborate skin care routine and regularly used drugstore moisturizer. She loved to do her own makeup, but for major events like the Oscars she worked with a makeup artist. She preferred sheer foundation, a soft blush, and used a powder cake eyeliner. She never wore false lashes, having been born with a double set of lashes."

"Elizabeth took a 10 minute bath at the end of her makeup application, to help set her makeup and relax a bit before the event," the rep added.
