Oscars: Looking back 20 years at the 1999 Academy Awards

Updated

The Oscars looked very different 20 years ago.

Harvey Weinstein was still the most powerful man in Hollywood, with Miramax's "Shakespeare in Love" reigning supreme at the 1999 Academy Awards, winning seven Oscars. The film won Best Picture and two acting awards: Best Actress for Gwyneth Paltrow and Best Supporting Actress for Judi Dench.

Paltrow was the belle of the ball that year. Clad in her now-iconic pink Ralph Lauren gown, Paltrow delivered an acceptance speech for the ages through tears as Hollywood's elite watched on.

Steven Spielberg won big, too: He nabbed Best Director for "Saving Private Ryan," while Roberto Benigni memorably climbed over seats at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to accept the Best Foreign Film award for "Life is Beautiful."

Also there were Jennifer Lopez, who was still a rising star at the time, Ellen DeGeneres with then-girlfriend Anne Heche, Tom Hanks with wife Rita Wilson and a young Matt Damon.
