Cardi B thanks Tom Petty for sending her flowers, doesn't know he died

A surprise delivery. Cardi B received a bouquet of flowers after her performance and win at the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, January 10, but the delivery caused the rapper a little bit of confusion.

The 26-year-old posted a video on her Instagram Story of a sweet note that came with the “big” floral arrangement. “You’ve got a heart so big it could crush this town,” the card read, using lyrics from the late Tom Petty’s song “Walls (Circus).”

While it’s likely that the mystery sender included the card with the quote from Petty as a tribute to the late musician (who died in October 2017 from an accidental overdose at the age of 66), it seems that the “Bodak Yellow” wordsmith wasn’t aware that Petty had passed away.

“Thank you, Tom Petty, for the flowers,” Cardi said in a since-deleted Instagram Story video. “I left the room, but, um … and the flowers were very big. I want to say thank you so much, and this is such a beautiful note. Motherf—kers love me, bro.”

Some fans found Cardi’s error to be hilarious and let their opinions be known on social media. “Mood is Cardi thanking Tom Petty for flowers when it was just a quote by him on a piece of paper sgsgdhjfksks love her,” one person tweeted. A second added, “I AM SCREAMING AT CARDI THANKING TOM PETTY FOR FLOWERS WHEN TOM PETTY IS DEAD.”

The Love & Hip Hop: New York alum won her first Grammy when Invasion of Privacy was named Best Rap Album during Sunday’s show. She was joined by husband Offset on stage as she accepted the award and said, “I can’t breathe. Oh my goodness. I’m sorry, I just — the nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed.”

Cardi later decided to share her award with the late Mac Miller, whose album Swimming was also nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys. “I read an article that Mac Miller’s family said that if he don’t win, they want me to win, so I’m sharing this Grammy with you, motherf–ker!” she exclaimed in an Instagram video after her win. “Rest in peace.” (Miller died from an accidental overdose in September 2018 at age 26.)
