Super Bowl LIII: Adam Levine thanks critics after halftime show

Adam Levine spoke out on Sunday night after his band, Maroon 5, performed during the Super Bowl halftime show in Atlanta.

The singer took to Instagram to share photos of the "ONE LOVE" lantern display that occurred during the performance to thank fans for their support, and he also addressed the many critics of the performance in the process.

"When we accepted the responsibility to perform at the SBHTS, I took out my pen and just wrote," he started. "Some of the words that came to me in that moment eventually made their way onto the incredible lanterns that flew high and low tonight."

"We thank the universe for this historic opportunity to play on the world’s biggest stage," he went on. "We thank our fans for making our dreams possible. And we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better. One Love."

Levine then listed out all of the words that he said he wrote down ahead of the gig: Forgive, laugh, cry, smile, share , live, endure, embrace, remember, enlighten, preserve, inspire, sweat, fight, express, give, receive, elevate, climb, unify, fortify, soften, dance, scream, dream, educate, provide, inhale, exhale, persevere, stand, kneel, overcome, love and listen.

Maroon 5, who welcomed guest performers Travis Scott and Big Boi onto the stage during their 14-minute set, delivered a hits-filled performance that played it relatively safe -- which felt appropriate following the controversy around their decision to perform in the first place amid calls to boycott the show.

Ahead of the show, in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, Levine addressed their divisive choice, saying that "no one thought about it more than [he] did."

"No one put more thought and love into this than I did. ... I spoke to many people, most importantly though, I silenced all the noise and listened to myself, and made my decision about how I felt," he explained, before adding that he "absolutely 100 percent" took a hard look at himself before ultimately deciding to take the offer. "I will never sit here and deny that. I think that to have not done that would have been deeply irresponsible."

During the performance itself, fans took umbrage with a variety of things on Sunday night, including Levine's choice of tank top for the final songs of the show. Perhaps to appease his critics, the singer eventually took off the shirt entirely.
