Arnold Schwarzenegger gushes about son, Joseph Baena, as he gets into bodybuilding

Arnold Schwarzenegger loves that his son, Joseph Baena, 21, is taking carrying on his legacy as a bodybuilder.

The former governor of California, 71, sat down with Mario Lopez on "Extra" this week, where he reacted to Baena's recreation of one of his most iconic poses on Instagram and revealed that the father-son duo has been able to bond over their love of weight lifting.

"He's very serious about this whole thing. He wants to compete in one of the classic physique competitions," Arnold said. "I don't think he wants to go through the extreme, but he wants to have the classic physique competition and he's training very hard. He was in the gym, and I said, 'Okay, now it's shoulder training, arm training...let's go do a little deadlift,' because I believe in training for strength. I put in 455 [pounds], which he has never lifted before. 455 and he did two reps!"

Though proud father is overjoyed that his son, who he shares with former housekeeper Midred Patricia Baena, is taking after him in the gym, he also shared with Lopez that he's encouraging Baena to continue focusing on school, as well.

"He's very serious about it, and I'm very happy about this because, as I said to him, 'It's important to take care of your body, train hard if you're passionate about that, but also study hard,'" he explained. "It's a key thing that he gets his business degree at Pepperdine."

Arnold and his son have been spending much more time together over the past several years, since the "Terminator" star split from ex Maria Shriver, who he's still friendly with. During an appearance on Howard Stern back in 2016, Schwarzenegger opened up about their relationship.

"He's terrific and he totally understands the situation," he said at the time. "So, it all has worked out ... It's a very tough situation for him. It's a very tough situation for my kids, very tough situation for my family. It was tough for everybody. But it has happened and now we have to figure it out, right?"
