Sundance 2019: Inside the film festival's star-studded first weekend

As the 2019 Sundance Film Festival heads into its second weekend, the buzz around this year's crop of films can still be felt, which is a testament to the magnitude of the festival's offerings this go 'round.

There's Mindy Kaling and Nisha Ganatra's "Late Night," which scored a record-breaking $13 million distribution deal with Amazon, then there's the Ted Bundy flick, "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile," which sees Zac Efron take on the role of the infamous serial killer and the controversial four-hour Michael Jackson documentary, "Leaving Neverland."

Judging by the conversation sparked by those three films alone, Sundance 2019 made a much bigger impact than the previous couple of years, which spawned incredible films of their own that failed to make a big splash as the year progressed into their respective awards seasons.

Of course, Sundance isn't only about films anymore: In addition to a slew of high-profile television premieres (See: Starz's Gregg Araki-created "Now Apocalypse," "Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men" and the Daniel Radcliffe-starring "Miracle Workers"), there are also a slew of star-studded parties, panels, brand activations and dinners that bring unexpected people together under the same roof.

I flew out to Sundance this year for the third time with Stella Artois, where I took notes throughout an action-packed weekend that featured an unplanned, surprise duet by two superstar singers, multiple nights at the celebrity-magnet that is TAO Park City, four screenings and much more.

Read about my weekend at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival below:

Day One

After taking a Lyft at the ungodly time of 4:30 a.m. to JFK Airport, I immediately started to spot the Sundance crowd taking the same Delta flight to Salt Lake City as I was: chic, aprés-ready ensembles of snow boots, fur, western hats and more. The telltale signs were everywhere, including a sighting of Billy Magnussen, who was headed to the festival for his film, "Velvet Buzzsaw," two years after appearing in past festival standout, "Ingrid Goes West."

We headed straight to the Newpark Hotel & Resort upon landing, and my first stop after checking in was Savvy Minerals' Sip & Lip Bar on Main Street, where Jenna Dewan was holding a press day. She looked stunning in an orange jumpsuit as we sat down to talk about her beauty routine, growing up as a cheerleader in Texas and her adorable daughter Everly.

Dewan recalled coming to Sundance once before, when she was first beginning to make a name for herself in the industry, and she told me about how shocked she was by the amount of free stuff she was given throughout the festival.

"The first time I came, which was 12 years ago or something insane, and I was so new and naive and I couldn’t believe the amount of swag," she told me. "I must have had Christmas gifts for three years just from this one Sundance trip. It was like Christmas every day for a whole weekend. It was so crazy. I was like, 'I don’t have to pay for this?!'"

Ah, to be a celebrity!

The next stop was Stella's Film Lounge, where the Women In Film organization was holding a panel with its Film Finishing Fung Grantees Panel and Celebration event moderated by Women In Film Executive Director, Kirsten Schaffer. The inspiring chat featured seven filmmakers who were given $25,000 to finish their respective films that inspire social change.

After a delicious welcome dinner at Riverhorse on Main, the group raced off to a private screening of "Honey Boy," directed by Alma Har'el. The emotional film was written by Shia LaBeouf as a semi-autobiographical account of his own life as a child star growing up with an abusive father. The film, which stars Noah Jupe, LaBeouf and Lucas Hedges, received a rousing reception at the screening, which was held just after the film's world premiere.

To cap off the day, I headed to TAO Park City with a friend, where, predictably, there was an overflowing crowd braving the cold to try to get themselves passed the bouncers and into the exclusive venue, which was presented by Stella Artois with Casamigos this year. Once inside, I saw Lena Waithe getting her photo taken in front of the step-and-repeat before joining wife Alana Mayo at a table that they were sharing with Michael B. Jordan and "If Beale Street Could Talk" breakout star KiKi Layne. Jordan and Layne appeared to enjoy themselves as they chatted and danced the night away.

Also at TAO? Shailene Woodley, "Love Simon" star Nick RobinsonGerard Butler, YouTube sensation Liza Koshy and Scheana Marie from "Vanderpump Rules," who we saw dancing on a ledge in a plunging glittered bodysuit. The night ended with a slightly underwhelming surprise performance by G-Eazy, who sang two songs around 3 a.m. before leaving the stage.

Day Two

The day started off with an early-morning screening of "Late Night" at the legendary Eccles Theater. The incredible film, which will surely be a hit when it's released this summer, was written by Mindy Kaling, who stars in the movie as the "diversity hire" in the writers' room for female late-night host, Emma Thompson. Nisha Ganatra directed the movie, which received a standing ovation at its second screening ever, hours after it was acquired by Amazon for $13 million. Following the film, Kaling, Ganatra and other co-stars like Reid Scott did a Q&A with the audience on stage, where they opened up about the filming process and messages behind the project.

"I wrote it for Emma Thompson," Kaling said. "A person I did not know. [...] My part and her part were the only two that I knew for certain [while writing the script]."

The film, which paints a damning portrait of the culture inside many all-male writers' rooms, made Kaling worry a bit that audiences would think she was throwing her former co-writers of "The Office" under the bus -- which was not the case at all, she said.

"I was worried people would watch this and think, like, 'Those guys from 'The Office' must be such d--kheads,'" she said to laughter. "I found observations and embellished them from my own life."

Directly after the screening, Kaling and Ganatra headed over to Stella's Film Lounge to discuss their film with Dominic Patten of Deadline. During the panel, Kaling recalled a moment on set where someone told Thompson that she should avoid turning a particular way in order to avoid wrinkles forming on her neck.

"Are we living in a world where we pretend that women don't have wrinkles in her neck when they turn?" Kaling recalls Thompson saying. "I don't want to be part of that world."

BACK TO SLIDE

After the panel, I wandered about town checking out various lounges and activations, including Chase Sapphire on Main and Wellhaus, a CBD-inspired lounge aimed at promoting Charlotte's Web, which was founded by a group of seven brothers in Colorado. While walking around, I spotted "Vanderpump Rules" star Scheana Marie again, as well as David Arquette as he headed to check out the Sunlighten Solo System at the Wanderluxxe Wellness Lounge with Essential Costa Rica.

The next event was the latest installment of the Stella Artois & Deadline Sundance Series, "Women In Film #GotStamped: Gender Parity Success Stories, featuring a slew of leading female producers and directors. Actress Maria Bello was in the audience for the inspiring panel that discusses ways in which Hollywood can continue to inch towards equal opportunities for men and women.

Ganatra was also on that panel, and she graciously agreed to do a quick interview with me at the Stella Artois space.

"It’s been a crazy day! I’m over-the-moon excited. I’m so happy that people are going to be able to see this movie that we’ve worked so hard on," she told us. "The fact that a movie with female stars and a female-driven story is the record-breaker at Sundance is good for all of us."

For dinner, I headed to ChefDance, a creative dinner pop-up series that features a rotating slate of superstar chefs hosting crowds of celebrities, influencers, movers and shakers for a celebratory evening. This time, Jessica Koslow of Sqirl in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Over four courses, guests like Chris MelloniAvril LavigneMacy GrayLala Kent and Maria Bello sipped on Marchesi Antinori wines and toasted to women in entertainment, technology and philanthropy.

During the dinner, guests were treated to a special treat when Macy Gray took the stage to perform several covers, as well as her hit song, "I Try." The singer revealed that she had missed two flights out to Park City before someone unexpected saved the day: Avril!

"I missed two flights, then guess who called? Avril Lavigne!" she said. "We've been having the best time."

Their fun Sundance continued that evening when Avril popped on stage to sing a surprise duet with Macy during "I Try."

To cap off the night, it was once again off to TAO Park City, where I ran into Macy Gray at coat check and gave her a hug, congratulating her on her epic performance earlier in the evening. She joined Avril at a table inside. Also there were Jesse Williams and Eiza Gonzalez.

Day Three

Another day, another early screening. This time, it was for the aforementioned "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile" starring Zac Efron as Ted Bundy. Though the movie itself left something to be desired (maybe it was the lack of actual violence or details on Bundy's crimes?), Efron and Collins both delivered incredible performances in the buzzworthy film. After the screening, director Joe Berlinger appeared for a Q&A with the audience.

Next, it was time for a little break from the action-packed Main Street for a little respite in Deer Valley, just a short drive up the mountain. There, I checked out the Veuve Clicquot's Aprés Lounge and Beach Club at the Montage Deer Valley. The fun little space is in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the brand's Rosé and allows skiers to hang out, drink some bubbly and listen to music just off the slopes.

While leaving the Montage, I spotted Josh Gad walking in to the luxurious hotel before heading over to the St. Regis for RAND Luxury's "Luxury Escape" event, where a slew of high-end brands set up shop for product demonstrations, tastings and more for an elite crowd.

I then headed back down into Park City for a pick-me-up at Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters, where I spotted actress Nikohl Boosheri, who I recognized from "The Bold Type."

That evening, Gucci teamed up with CHIME FOR CHANGE to host a screening of the short film, "The Future is Fluid," directed by Jade Jackman. Following the screening, there was an emotional panel featuring young LGBTQ activists. Actors Charlie Plummer and Nick Galitzine were among those in the audience.

Next, it was time to check out the Vanity Fair premiere party for Starz's upcoming show, "Now Apocalypse," where guests took part in a fun silent disco. While chatting with a friend, I put my headphones down and one of the stars of the show, Tyler Posey, leaned over and asked if he could borrow the headphones as he danced with some friends that included co-star Beau Mirchoff. Also there were "Dumplin'" star Danielle Macdonald and Catherine Curtin from "Orange Is the New Black."

It was back to TAO Park City to end the night with Stella Artois, though it appeared as though most of the biggest names had either already had their fair share of fun on the exhausting weekend or had jetted back to Los Angeles to attend the SAG Awards.

Day Four

My last day at Sundance started with a sighting of "Big Time Adolescence" co-stars Pete Davidson and Machine Gun Kelly walking down Main Street with an entourage of about 20 people as they headed towards the IndieWire Studio.

I spotted them on the way to the Jon & Vinny's pop-up restaurant at the DIRECTV Lodge Presented by AT&T. The gorgeous space was a celebrity magnet all weekend, as evidenced by the constant presence of paparazzi and fans waiting outside of its entrance. Inside, I spotted "Stranger Things" star Noah Schnapp eating, as well as popular singer-songwriter Leland. Halfway through our carb-filled meal, the "Them That Follow" cast took part in a group lunch, including Kaityn DeverWalton Goggins and Lewis Pullman.

As we headed out, Demi Moore and Jessica Williams walked in between promo stops for their film "Corporate Animals."

It was time to then head over to Stella's Film Lounge for the last of the weekend's Deadline panels, this time for "Fighting With My Family," where there was an extremely packed house full of guests hoping to see Vince Vaughn, who was participating on the panel. Also on the panel were director Stephen Merchant, "Game of Thrones" star Lena Headey and Florence Pugh, among others.

While discussing the film, which tells the real-life story of female WWE wrestler Paige, Merchant revealed that he tried to get Donald Trump to approve of archival footage featuring him to be included in the film -- to no avail.

"[I tried to] contact the White House to try to get him to sign off," Merchant said. "Unsurprisingly, we never heard back from Trump."

After a much-needed afternoon nap, the group headed back out for one last outing: The lively "Wu-Tang: Of Mics and Men" premiere party, which was packed to the brim with die-hard fans of the Wu-Tang Clan and those involved with the movie. Among the crowd were Jessica WilliamsGerard ButlerLil Rey HoweryJim Gaffigan and, of course, the Wu-Tang Clan themselves. RZA garnered cheers as he started DJing and rapping live during the rowdy affair.

It was a perfect ending to my experience at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival: Full of a random assortment of celebrities who were there to genuinely celebrate film and television projects, as well as adoring festivalgoers who were just happy to be along for the ride.
