The ultimate comeback!

Geoffrey Owens stepped out Sunday night for the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the surprise appearance put Twitter users into a great mood. After the camera panned to the the former "Cosby Show" during the annual “I am an actor” segment, social media was flooded with joy.

"Somewhere in the middle of the road of my life, I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt, but instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at a local Trader Joe's to see if I could hang in there with my career and it's actually worked out pretty well," he said. "I'm Geoffrey Owens and I'm an actor!"

Owens made headlines late last year after a fan took pictures of him working at Trader Joe's, which turned into a job-shaming media frenzy. However, the 57-year-old actor got the last laugh when the viral photo turned out to be a blessing in disguise -- ultimately securing him major roles working with Tyler Perry and other high-profile entertainment spots.

On SAG awards silver carpet Sunday, Owens caught up with USA TODAY before the ceremony where he dished on how the viral photo has altered his career.

"I was still working; I was still doing occasional things but since that thing happened … I’ve been involved in three films and three or four TV projects and done hundreds of interviews," he said. "And my life is completely different. It’s not better, I had a good life before all this. But it’s certainly more productive in terms of the career I’ve chosen, and my calling, I’ve been able to fulfill that a great deal more since all this happened."

"When it first happened, I thought it was going to be devastating; I thought it was going to be catastrophic, and it has been the opposite," he said. "So fortunately, that difficult time didn’t last very long. A couple of hours of humiliation versus the last five months of support and love and employment. So it was worth it.”

Owens played Sondra Huxtable’s husband, Elvin Tibideaux, on the hit show "The Cosby Show" from 1985 to 1992.
