Catriona Gray shares what kept her anchored in her journey to become Miss Universe

Catriona Gray is quickly becoming one of the most popular Miss Universe winners ever. Crowned in December, Gray is the fourth Filipina to win the pageant after also being crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2018 earlier that year.

Gray stopped by BUILD to talk about her path to success, and got candid about how difficult the road can be. "There is a certain pressure because so many people get so passionate about the contestants..." she said of the Filipino culture.

She explained that the hardest part was dealing with criticism, but by building up her "mental fortitude" she was able to make it through. “If I had to develop anything as a candidate, it was mental fortitude," she explained. "To be bombarded on social media...it was really hard to always have a thick skin."

Despite the hardship, she has found great support in her community and says she gets her energy from her fans. “Every time I saw a supporter, heard the word Philippines or saw the flag, joy came over me…”
