Golden Globes host Sandra Oh says she’s ‘not interested in’ talking about Trump

While co-hosting Sunday’sGolden Globe Awards, actress Sandra Oh plans to avoid bringing up President Donald Trump and will leave politics to the nominees and winners, arguing that it’s more important to focus on “actual real change.”

“I’m not interested in [talking about Trump] at all,” she said in a conversation with co-host Andy Samberg that was published Wednesday in The Hollywood Reporter. “What I’m interested in is pointing to actual real change. I want to focus on that ’cause people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want — and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure — but we also make culture.”

“How many gazillions of people have seen ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’?” she continued, referring to the massive box office success of the two movies, both featuring ensemble casts consisting primarily of actors of color. “That changes things. Just speaking for my own community, people cried a lot in [‘Crazy Rich Asians’], and it’s not only because it’s a great story and a classic romantic comedy — it is because seeing yourself reflected onscreen is really emotional when you don’t even know that you’re carrying so much grief of never being seen.”

The “Killing Eve” star, who made history last year as the first Asian woman nominated for the Emmy award for best actress in a drama series, has long spoken out about the importance of diversity and representation in Hollywood, and the paucity of roles for Asian actors.

The duo agreed that as hosts, they don’t plan to “go hard into detailed politics stuff,” as Samberg said.

Oh sees the role as “really to be there to support all the nominees and those who take that platform to say whatever they want,” she said. “I don’t really think that [getting political] is for the hosts necessarily. You make it an open and safe place for whoever wants to use that platform to speak.”

Samberg went on to note that several of the show’s most memorable moments in recent years involved winners using rousing acceptance speeches to make powerful calls to action, like Meryl Streep in 2017 and Oprah Winfrey last year.

In the Trump era in particular, award show hosts have had to toe the line in deciding whether to delve into politics.

Last year’s Golden Globes host, Seth Meyers, made brief references to Trump in his opening monologue. The president largely went unmentioned throughout the rest of the show, though much of the night’s focus was on the Me Too movement.

Samberg and Oh also defended award shows against the perennial criticisms that they can be vapid and shallow.

“I think people are ready and could use a little smile. Everyone is depressed, and maybe that’s as good a reason as any that everyone could use a little time to laugh and celebrate,” said Samberg, a “Saturday Night Live” alum and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star. “Not to ignore anything, but we spend so much time every day wallowing in a lot of things that are happening in our world that are really depressing, and with good reason — that stuff needs to be paid attention to — but there’s also power to being positive and celebratory in the tougher times as well.”

“I don’t think it’s shallow to 1) have fun and 2) be honestly celebratory,” Oh said. “Just the fact that I’m fucking up there is crazy-pants in a great way.”

Hairstylist created her sophisticated look using Sun Bum.

1. Step 1: Hair Preparation: Naselli first began by using Sun Bum Beach Formula Shampoo and Conditioner for clean, shiny and moisturized hair. Next, he used Sun Bum Beach Formula 3-in-1 Leave In to boost shine, add body, tame frizz and prevent split ends.

2. Step 2: Texturize: Naselli used Sun Bum Beach Formula Sea Spray on damp hair from roots to tip to create texture and grip. He then used a medium brush to blow out the hair.

3. Step 3: Styling: Naselli created a middle part on the hair and applied Sun Bum Beach Formula Shine On from root to end for maximum shine. Using a small tooth comb, he then slicked back the hair into a low, tight ponytail and secured with an elastic. Naselli the twisted the ponytail to create a long coil and secured the end with a few small bobby-pins. Lastly, he applied Sun Bum Beach Formula Dry Shampoo for extra hold and shine.

Giuliana's perfect pony was achieved with the help of celebrity hairstylist Nick Stenson.

“A twist on a classic ponytail. We wanted to do something that showed off the lines of her dress and didn’t compete with it. The shape of the pony compliments the back of her dress perfectly. Use Matrix Stylelink to create ease of style and provide long lasting hold for night. To prep the hair we used Biolage R.A.W. Color Care, a sustainable, natural-origin formula to maintain vibrant color,” he said.

To get her loose waves:

Step 1: Prep damp hair by spritzing the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray from roots to ends to protect hair from damage caused by hot tools and styling.

Step 2: Gently towel-dry hair, and then apply a dollop of the TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Mousse at roots to create a voluminous foundation.

Step 3: Create a sleek, middle part and using a large ceramic brush, blow-dry hair in sections to achieve a smooth, straight look.

Step 4: Using a 1 and ¼ inch curling iron, curl hair in 1 inch sections from mid-lengths to ends. Ensure ends are inside the barrel.

Step 5: Spray the NEW TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 2: Smooth all over to lock the look into place achieving style without stiffness.

“Gal is wearing a stunning Tom Ford column gown this evening with a cropped tuxedo jacket over top. The look is bold, stunning and inspiring, and I wanted to balance it appropriately with hair that was softer and a bit ethereal. We decided on a French twist with height, texture and beautiful shine. It was the perfect feminine silhouette to juxtapose her amazing look,” explained Dove stylist Mark Townsend.

1. To start, I sprayed her wet hair with Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99) to ensure her hair was well protected before blowing it out with my Dyson Supersonic hair dryer ($399.99) and round bristle brush.

2. Next, I added a slight wave to her hair with my Harry Josh Pro Tools Marcel Curling Iron (PRO TIP: When creating an up-do, it’s always easier to put a bend in the hair before doing so. It helps shape the look because the bends work with the twists and turns of the up-do so the shape falls into itself more easily).

3. Once I finished putting waves in the hair, I sprayed Honest Beauty Honestly Effortless Sea Salt Spray throughout and began building the French twists.

4. Gal’s hair is cut into a lob right now, so I actually created two French twists – one at the nape of her neck, and the other right in line with her ears – to ensure all of her hair could be pulled back properly.

5. Once I created the twists, I took the pieces around her hairline in the front and teased for romantic texture before blending it into the top of her French twists in a beautiful swirl pattern.

6. Finally, I went in and pieced out the French twist to see the dimension of the look on her dark hair before spraying the style liberally with Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99) while simultaneously diffusing with the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer (diffuser attachment) to lock-in shine and hold for a look that will last all night.

“Staying with the theme of #wewearblack, Laura wore a gorgeous black Armani Prive dress. For the hair, we chose to do rock and roll look, with tons of volume, sexy movement, and effortless, piecey waves!" said stylist Ryan Trygstad.

1. I started by prepping her clean, towel dried hair using Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99) on the mid lengths through the ends. This product is brand new from Dove, and ensures much needed protection from any heat styling…plus, it adds tons of shine!

2. I then layered on the Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse ($3.99), concentrating the product at the root to ensure maximum volume and lift, and began blow drying her hair. I used a small boar bristle brush to enforce texture and hold for the curls.

3. Once her hair was dried, I sprayed Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.99) before waving each section of her hair with the GHD Wave Iron.

4. To finish things off, I incorporated Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum ($5.99) to create a piecey look with added shine, for an extra polished look for the red carpet.

5. The finishing touch? Lock in the style with Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99) all throughout!

Learn how celeb hairstylist Renato Campora got her gorgeous look!

1. Campora began with a deep side part to define Chastain’s look and compliment the structure of her gown.

2. Then, Campora applied Goldwell StyleSign Just Smooth Control Smoothing Blow Dry Spray to Jessica’s damp hair to speed up drying time and impart shape and control to the hair.

3. Campora then applied Goldwell StyleSign Curly Twist Around Curl Styling Sprayto help form the waves and protect her hair from high heat.

4. Next, Campora blow dried her hair smooth and used an iron to curl hair section by section. After, he pinned each curl while it cooled to create definition and volume.

5. After the curls cooled and set, Campora brushed Jessica’s hair out, pushing it to the left side.

6. Campora finished with Goldwell StyleSign Perfect Hold Big Finish Volumizing Hair Spray to ensure Chastain’s voluminous, sophisticated waves stayed in place all evening.

To get her volumized updo:

Step 1: Prep damp hair by spritzing the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray to protect hair from damage caused by hot tools and styling.

Step 2: Apply TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Mousse to roots while hair is still damp to create lift and volume. Brush through with a wide-toothed comb to evenly distribute product.

Step 3: Using your fingertips, apply TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Color Smoothing Serum to ends while hair is still damp to ensure a sleek and smooth look after blow drying.

Step 4: Blow dry sections of hair using a small, round brush twisting hair while blow-drying to create waves.

Step 5: Use a flat iron to make “S” shape waves.  Apply TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Color Smoothing Serum throughout hair using your fingertips to break up the waves.

Step 6: Split hair into a top and bottom section. Pull the top section back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic at the crown of your head. Braid the ponytail and twist it into a bun securing with bobby pins. Repeat with the bottom section of hair to create two braided buns.

Step 7: Spray the NEW TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 2: Smooth all over to lock the look into place achieving style without stiffness.

“Shailene’s dress had a fierce and beautiful feel to it and I wanted the hair to mirror that. With her demonstrating support for the #TimesUp movement today, it was important for both of us to convey a look that keep it classic yet strong. Swept-back hair allowed the focus to be on Shailene," said Shailene's stylist Marcus Francis.

1. Begin with damp hair, add Suave Professionals Natural Volume Mousse to roots on the sides and top section.

2. Use a flat paddle brush (like a Mason Pearson) to blow dry the hair, drying away from the face for a swept-back feel.

3. Using a 1” curling iron, wrap the lower half of the hair to create a soft wave at the ends. Spray Suave Professionals Natural Hold Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray and brush out the hair using a Denman brush.

4. Apply R+Co High Dive Moisture Shine Creme on the sides and top sections, and comb through at the roots to create hold while still achieving that natural look.

5. Dry the front using a diffuser and dryer to lock in the shape.

6. Seal in the style with hairspray for extra hold around the face and throughout the rest of the hair.”

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - JANUARY 07: Actor Dakota Johnson attends The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 7, 2018 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Venturelli/WireImage)

“For Dakota’s red carpet look, we really focused on playing up her black Gucci gown so we underdid her hair with a sexy, messy ponytail – ala Brigitte Bardot meets Jane Birkin," explained stylist Johnnie Sapong.

1. To achieve this look, I first applied Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99) and then blow dried her hair with a medium-sized round brush.

2. Once her hair was dry, I sprayed Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($3.99) throughout to add some texture and body.

3. I then backcombed the hair at her roots and misted each section with Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.99) to avoid flyaways.

4. Now for the fun part! I pulled her hair back into a loose ponytail and left out some face-framing pieces for a piecey, yet soft look.

5. To finish, I used a large barrel curling iron on her ponytail for added texture. Once her hair had cooled down, I used a small amount of Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum ($5.99) for separation, and she was out the door!

Millie's fierce cat-eye was achieved by makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan.

Face: Kelsey prepped Millie's skin by beginning with Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate to smooth the skin and ensure lasting hydration throughout the long evening. She then usedKiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado to the sensitive skin under the eyes for added Moisture and to prep the eyes for concealer. Having the under eyes sufficiently hydrated will help the concealer stay longer and avoid it from looking too cakey or dry. To combat unwanted shine and control oil on her t-zone, Kelsey applied Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector so there would be no need to touch her up too much throughout the night. To finish prepping before makeup Kelsey used the Kiehl’s Facial Fuel No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm on Millie’s lips.

Kelsey then started on her makeup by applying La Prairie skin caviar concealer + foundation in warm beige with a damp sponge to the face and décolletage.

To add definition to the cheeks, she used the Avon True Color Transforming Contouring Stick in Medium followed by the Avon True Color Illuminating Stick and Avon Powder Highlight for an extreme glow on the cheekbones.

Eyes: Millie’s black liner defining her eyes was created with Avon True Color Glimmersticks Eyeliner in Blackest Black. She applied the liner along the top lash line and extended slightly upward at the ends to create a subtle flick. To finish the eyes, Kelsey applied a couple generous coats of Avon True Color Wide Awake Mascara to add drama to Millie’s lashes.

Lips: To not stray too far from Millie's gorgeous natural rosy lip color, Kelsey used Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment to hydrate the lips and accentuate her natural beauty.

Explained David Stanwell, "Octavia’s dress for the Golden Globes was sparkly and has quite a flow so we went for an amped up version of one of her classic looks. She wanted to keep the voluminous waves youthful, yet polished for the big night!”

1. Before I began blow drying her hair, I used Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse ($3.99) to add texture and hold in her hair before styling, followed by a few pumps of Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum($5.99) to add shine. Pro Tip: To set the foundation of any look, I always recommend mixing a few of the right products to prep the hair.

2. Then, I blow dried her hair with a round brush to smooth out and create the desired face-framing shape before making it more voluminous using a hot tool.

3. Once her hair was cool, I sectioned it off into 3 parts – the two sides and the back. I like to leave the sides for last because they are very important as they are framing her face.

4. Section-by-section, I went through and sprayed Dove Style+Care Smooth and Shine Heat Protection Spray ($4.99) to prevent any heat damage. After, I wrapped small sections of her hair around a 1-inch curling iron to create big waves by twisting hair back away from the face.

5. To finish and give her hair a more relaxed look, I ran my fingers through to break up each curl and used Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.99) to hold the shape of her hair securely in place without any stiffness.
