Singer Jordan Pruitt reveals she was sexually abused as a teenager

Jordan Pruitt is coming forward with her own #MeToo story.

The former "The Voice" contestant, who became famous as a teenager for a variety of songs recorded for Disney Channel original films, took to Facebook on Monday to reveal in a lengthy post that she was sexually abused "for almost two years" at the height of her fame as a teenager. The abuse, she said, had her "contemplating suicide every day."

Pruitt, now 27, reveals that at the age of 14, after being signed to Hollywood Records, she began a nearly two-year relationship with an unnamed man who began to control her career, encouraged her to get emancipated from her parents and even promised that he would leave his then-fiancée to start a life with her when she was just 15 years old.

"I am filming the music video for 'Outside Looking In.' This person was running around the set like he owned the place and acting as if he was directing the whole video himself," she recalled of her first time working with her abuser. "I remember him having full control over what I was wearing and even what makeup they put on me. This was where I first felt he was 'grooming' me."

Pruitt then said that her label would go on to encourage her to lose weight and enlisted the man to hire a personal trainer for her, after which "he became obsessed with my appearance and even withheld certain foods and food in general from me."

"I do remember having a childish crush. The person was helping make ALL my dreams come true, and thought I was so talented at every single thing I did," she said of the beginnings of their relationship. "I didn't think anything was wrong until I felt this pit in my stomach. I KNEW something was wrong. Deep in the inner parts of my soul, I was trapped."

"At fifteen, this person had brainwashed me into thinking that the things that were happening were 'natural' and 'okay,'" she went on. "For the record, while all this was happening to me, he was engaged to be married. While I will spare you any of the mind-piercing details, I can honestly and unfortunately say that this man sexually abused me for almost two years of my life. I am the victim of molestation because of him."

During the reflective post, Pruitt questioned how any of this could've happened to her and explained that she feels as though the man took advantage of her age and naiveté.

"Were there any signs? I guess? I was so young and at 14 I had never really experienced anything at all," she said. "I guess you could say my naiveness got the best of me. But he took advantage of my naivety. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing; almost as if he had done this many times before."

The relationship came to an end after Pruitt confided in a friend when she was 15 that the man was planning on leaving his fiancée to be with her. Her friend told Pruitt's parents, who then called the police.

"I didn't know who to trust, so I didn't trust ANYONE," she said. "I was scared. I am still sometimes scared at 27."

When the police came to her home to inquire about the nature of her relationship with the man, Pruitt lied and "told them that nothing had happened other than that this man has developed a sick obsession with" her, noting that the police never filed a report.

During the course of their time together, Pruitt says that the man made her think that her parents "were just in it for the 'Disney Money'" and "made it almost impossible for [her] to cut ties with him."

"He made it so difficult that I almost lost my record deal entirely," she added. "Everyone at the label thought he was genuinely psychotic. At this point, I wasn't even eating and could barely get out of bed. I remember very vividly staying in my room for two weeks straight and contemplating suicide every single day."

Pruitt explained that she's currently in counseling and that her therapist encouraged her to share her story: "She told me that 'secrets make you sick.'" She said that she "couldn't be happier" to be able to share story with her fans and feels "happy and healthy" now with a husband and new career working at a law firm.

Pruitt shot to fame in the years between 2006 and 2008 when she recorded a slew of songs for Disney Channel original movies, like "Outside Looking In" for "Read It and Weep" and "Jump to the Rhythm" for "Jump In!" She opened for The Cheetah Girls on tour in 2006.

In 2012, she appeared on the third season of NBC's "The Voice" and joined Christina Aguilera's team before being eliminated in the battle rounds. After continuing to pursue a singing career in Nashville, Pruitt announced on Twitter in 2017 that she was retiring from music.

"After much prayer, I have decided to retire from music," she wrote. "What a fantastic journey this has been. My fans, you have truly put magic into my life. I will cherish every show I got to play for you all. Every lyric you've sang with me. Thank you for all the joy you've given me."
