Kevin Hart's Oscars fallout: Celebrities weigh in with mix of criticism, support

Updated

It appears most celebrities are going to stay mum about the first wave of 2019 Oscars drama.

The weeks leading up to the Academy Awards are never short on controversy, and this year's first batch of messy headlines came thanks to Kevin Hart -- or, more specifically, his Twitter history. After the Academy made a late-stage announcement this week that Hart would host the 2019 ceremony (the host is typically secured further in advance), it didn't take long for the internet to call out Hart's past homophobic tweets, most of which date back to around 2011.

The outrage culminated with Hart's decision to step down as host, and while Twitter is chattering about the fallout, most fellow celebrities are keeping quiet. Only a few have decided to weigh in, with most erring on the side of criticizing Hart, but some showing support.

Celebrity reactions to the Kevin Hart Oscars situation:

Jamie Lee Curtis left nothing up to interpretation with a firm message: "Homophobia is not positivity," she wrote, referencing Hart's video message to fans before he officially decided to step down.

“Guys, I’m almost 40 years old,” Hart said in the selfie video. “If you don’t believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to hold people in a position where they always have to justify or explain the past, then do you. I’m the wrong guy, man. I’m in a great place. A great mature place where all I do is spread positivity."

Other stars avoided mentioning Hart while still weighing in on the overall search for a new host, with Busy Philipps rattling off names of eligible female comics and Ricky Gervais suggesting himself.
