Fans are divided after Jessica Simpson calls out Natalie Portman: 'I think you've misunderstood'

Jessica Simpson is calling out Natalie Portman.

The singer-turned-designer took to Twitter on Wednesday after the actress' appearance on the "Today" show, during which she said that she was "confused" by one of the then-rising star's magazine shoots.

"@NataliePortman -- I was disappointed this morning when I read that I 'confused' you by wearing a bikini in a published photo taken of me when I was still a virgin in 1999," she wrote. "As public figures, we both know our image is not totally in control at all times, and that the industry we work in often tries to define us and box us in."

"However, I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves, which is why I believed then -- and believe now -- that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex," she continued. "I have always embraced being a role model to all women to let them know that they can look however they want, wear whatever they want have sex or not have sex with whomever they want. The power lies within us as individuals."

"I have it it my practice to not shame other women for their choices," she finished. "In this era of Time's Up and all the great work you have done for women, I suggest you do the same."

Portman had appeared on the NBC morning show earlier on Wednesday to promote her new film, "Vox Lux," in which she plays a pop star.

"I remember being a teenager, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying, 'I'm a virgin' while wearing a bikini," Portman said. "And I was confused. Like, I don't know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl."

Simpson famously declared early in her career that she had promised her preacher father, Joe Simpson, that she would save herself for marriage. Simpson married Nick Lachey in 2002 before divorcing in 2006. She's now married to Eric Johnson, who she wed in 2014.

Portman, who is heavily involved in the Time's Up movement, has yet to respond to Simpson's callout. Fans on Twitter, however, made their voices heard -- some were in full support of the "A Public Affair" hitmaker, while others think she misunderstood what Portman was saying.

"Come on queen!!!" one person wrote. "Let women express themselves however they wish!!! That is your personal choice don't let anyone police u."

"Be proud of your moral stance," someone else said.

"Have u considered @natalieportman might not have called u out but the magazine?" another person tweeted. "That it wasn’t u but the media that, actually, caused confusion by not thinking about how headlines in combination w/ specific pictures come across? Could’ve been any example. I think she’s with u."

"I think you've misunderstood what Natalie was saying," another fan posited.
