Chrissy Teigen: Social media is 'why I exist' (Exclusive)

Updated

Chrissy Teigen knows that every time she tweets, multiple articles will be written about whatever she says.

Whether it be her reaction to Donald Trump blocking her on Twitter, her response to a headline about her children or simply her everyday musings about random topics, Teigen's social media activity continuously keeps her name in the headlines -- and she swears she isn't trying to make the news. It's just become an unavoidable reality for her.

"Some people think that things [I tweet] are calculated, but sometimes like anybody else, I just say things and don't mean for it to be turned into a story," Teigen told AOL's Gibson Johns exclusively at the Chase Ultimate Rewards Holiday Pop-Up this week. "That’s why I exist honestly -- because of social media and some of those stories -- but it’s funny now how one article can be based off of just one tweet."

Though she acknowledges that the incessant coverage of her Twitter account has helped raise her profile, Teigen also admits that her constant presence on the platform has skewed her perception of the public. In a world where the President of the United States shares his unbridled thoughts on Twitter on a daily basis, in essence making it a primary source of news, isn't everyone on Twitter? As Teigen has come to realize, the answer to that question is a resounding "no."

"For me, it’s just weird, because in my mind -- because I’m so consumed by social media and Twitter -- I feel like everyone’s on Twitter, so when [something I tweet] gets translated to a group of people that aren’t on Twitter, it’s not read the same way," she explained to AOL. "And then people forget that this was just a spur of the moment, dumb-ass tweet, and now it’s a story. But I get it now."

Of course, Teigen is known for more than just her social media presence. The beloved star began her career as a model and has since gone on to become the best-selling author of two cookbooks and the host of "Lip Sync Battle," among a slew of other projects. Now that Teigen is also a mother-of-two -- she shares daughter, Luna, and son, Miles, with her husband, John Legend -- she admitted that she takes on so much professionally to send an inspiring message to her children.

"I do a ton for my daughter," Teigen said. "Just as a woman in general, you do a lot of things to prove to [your kids] that you can do it all or that you can balance it. Sometimes you’re frustrated with yourself because you’re like, 'Oh, my God, can I?' But everybody goes through that and is juggling and has a lot going on. It’s cool for them to one day see that mommy does it all and that she did things that she was excited and happy about, did things that made her happy, worked with people that made her happy and I hope she’s able to see that one day."

"Right now, honestly, she’s just like, 'Where are you going?'" Teigen laughed. "Which is fine, too."
