A man with talent, poise and looks to kill: Idris Elba is this year's Sexiest Man Alive.
Fans have lobbied People for years to choose Elba for its top spot, but for Elba, 46, the news came as a surprise. The announcement was "an ego boost for sure," he told the outlet.
British-born Elba first made a name for himself in the United States in 2002 on HBO's acclaimed "The Wire," on which he played a drug kingpin. He's since become one of the world's hottest movie actors, starring in blockbusters including the "Avengers" and "Star Trek" franchises and the Oscar-nominated "Molly's Game."
Elba is the 33rd star chosen for the coveted title. The competition began in 1985 and through the years has crowned heartthrobs including Harrison Ford, Patrick Swayze, Denzel Washington and John F. Kennedy, Jr.
After more than three decades of winners, Elba marks the second black man to claim the title after Washington took it in 1996. The very first winner was Mel Gibson in 1985.
