Carrie Underwood isn’t afraid to show off her battle scars.

The country superstar shared a flashback selfie from the set of her “Love Wins” music video on Friday with a scar from her 2017 facial injury evident. The mark, above her lip, came after Underwood took a terrible fall on the front steps of her home in Nashville.

Underwood got about 50 stitches after the injury, which also left her with a broken wrist. The American Idol alum retreated from the spotlight to heal, making a triumphant return to the stage in April. The “Cry Pretty” singer has been open about the “gruesome” incident, which she believes left her looking a bit different.

“Any time someone gets injured, it looks pretty bad in the beginning, and you’re like, ‘What is this going to wind up like?’ You just don’t know,” Underwood told Redbook in September. “It was also a perception thing, because I look at myself [now] and I see it quite a bit, but other people are like, ‘I wouldn’t have even noticed.’ Nobody else looks at you as much as you think they do. Nobody notices as much as you think they will, so that’s been nice to learn.”

She also slammed rumors that the injury was simply a cover-up for plastic surgery. “It’s a little sad, because the truth is just as interesting. I wish I’d gotten some awesome plastic surgery to make this [scar] look better,” Underwood joked.

The Grammy winner also said there were some “personal” issues that kept her away from the spotlight.

“There were some personal things that happened,” she admitted. “And I had the accident and all of that to get through … and just life. Life is full of ups and downs, and I might have had a few more downs than ups last year.”

Right now, it’s all about the “ups” of life. Underwood is expecting her second child with her husband, Mike Fisher.
