Glenn Weiss' daughters, colleagues reportedly dismayed by viral Emmy Awards proposal

Cheers and applause filled the theater when Glenn Weiss publicly proposed to Jan Svendsen onstage at Monday night's Emmy Awards -- but he wasn't exactly getting that reaction from his own family and colleagues.

Weiss' 17- and 21-year-old daughters were "completely shocked and blindsided" by the engagement, according to an insider at Page Six: “He’s coming across as this great romantic hero, but it was pretty thoughtless.”

Page Six also notes that at a post-Emmys press conference, Weiss said he and Svendsen had been together "I don't know -- 10 years or so." Given that court records show he and his ex began divorce proceedings in 2008, the timeline is raising some eyebrows.

The insider also hinted that Weiss and Svendsen's relationship was a source of contention when it began. Weiss' ex-wife also works in the TV industry.

Meanwhile, across the country, the grand gesture also ticked off Weiss' colleagues in New York City.

“Glenn has produced and directed the Tonys for CBS for many years and is known as an unforgiving stickler when it comes to keeping acceptance speeches to the allotted 45 seconds," Page Six reports. "Every year, Glenn gives this pompous speech to all the nominees, lecturing everyone about how the clock starts the second your name is called ... Leave it to him to completely flout his own rule in order to grab as much attention as humanly possible for him and his girlfriend.”

For her part, Svendsen -- who was previously the Chief Marketing Officer for the Tony Awards -- told Time she never saw the moment coming: "I was expecting a private proposal if there ever was to be one."
