Jimmy Kimmel is nothing if not a true romantic. The late-night host supported love in all its glory Tuesday night when he invited Glenn Weiss, “The Oscars” director who proposed at the Emmys, and his future bride, Jan Svendsen, onto “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to have a chat with him — from their bed.
OK, it was a set, but the late-night host feigned shock when he saw the two lovebirds sipping glasses of champagne in their PJs. Kimmel told Weiss, “no offense, but I never guessed that the Emmy winner that I would be most interested in talking to after the show would be you! I mean it’s really remarkable, you stole the show last night.”
During his acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing of a Variety Special for “The Oscars” Monday night, Weiss proposed to Svendsen, who was in the audience.
“Do you know why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend?” the director said from the Emmys’ stage at the Microsoft Theater. “Because I want to call you my wife.”
The following night, he told Kimmel why he felt the time was right to pop the question. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks and I think maybe I got a little more perspective on life and it just became clear about a week or two ago that I wanted to do something at some point coming,” Weiss said, noting the death of his mother, who he had mentioned during his proposal Monday. “I didn’t think it would happen this quickly, but an opportunity arose.”
Weiss says he would have figured out a different way to propose if he hadn’t won and made it on stage — but he was concerned about what to do if he did win and was cut off. And that’s mainly because, as a man who has directed the Oscars show, Weiss is the one who is used to playing that loud music when people run over in their acceptance speeches.
“I was actually really worried about that, having been in the seat and knowing how those shows function,” Weiss said. “So I really kind of ran through what I wanted to say in my head and then as the night was going on and I saw how much time I kept editing and filtering and just hoping it wouldn’t go too long.”
