Karlie Kloss: Fiancé Josh Kushner and I 'share a lot of the same liberal values'

Updated

Karlie Kloss is opening up about her years-long relationship with Joshua Kushner -- and sharing details of how he popped the question!

The supermodel and Koding With Klossy founder told Vogue that she waited a month to share news of her engagement with the public (Kushner proposed in June, and they announced their engagement in July), and she said that "the proposal was romantic and sweet."

"We spent the weekend in upstate New York," she added. "Just the two of us."

Kloss, 26, has notoriously avoided talking about her romance with Kushner. Though the two have been together for nearly seven years after being seated next to each other at a dinner party when she was 19, the St. Louis native has routinely rejected questions about her love life, which has only increased the intrigue around the couple -- especially since Josh's brother, Jared, became a more high-profile confidante of Donald Trump.

Jared married Ivanka Trump back in 2009, and it's unclear what kind of relationship Kloss has to the high-profile couple. When Ivanka publicly congratulated her "sister" on her engagement in the comments of her Instagram announcement, fans were quick to speculate about the future sisters-in-law's relationship, and whether or not Kloss would follow Ivanka's lead and convert to Orthodox Judaism before they get married.

Needless to say, Kloss wouldn't go into specifics with Vogue, but did allude to certain "complications" that have come along with being attached to the Kushner and Trump families.

"At the end of the day, I've had to make decisions based on my own moral compass -- forget what the public says, forget social media," she explained. "I've chosen to be with the man I love despite the complications. It's frustrating, to be honest, that the spotlight is always shifted away from my career toward my relationship. I don't think the same happens in conversations with men."

And as Kloss has navigated the last several years of her life alongside her venture capitalist now-fiancé, the couple has grown together.

"We’ve really grown together personally and professionally," she said. "Josh knows that I’m just a nerdy, curious human being. I think that’s why he loves me. We have each other’s back."

Though not much is known about their wedding plans, public interest will certainly skyrocket as the fashion, tech and political worlds collide when they celebrate their nuptials: Some of the likely potential guests would be Jared and Ivanka, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Kloss' pals Gigi Hadid, Serena Williams and Taylor Swift.
