Christian Siriano on taking Whoopi Goldberg as a date to the CFDAs

Fashionista.com said it best when they called Christian Siriano the Kelly Clarkson of "Project Runway." The fashion designer who won the fourth season of Bravo's "Project Runway" has come along way since his initial debut on to the fashion scene.

From possibly starting the trend of high-low fashion collabs with his line for Payless shoes back in 2008, Siriano understands the importance of creative partnerships. AOL sat down with the designer in NYC during the unveiling of his brand new line collaboration with Transitions Optical.

"What I do is not always accessible to everyone, which we know. Not everyone can afford a $16,000 tulle dress - so that was always the thing. Because I am in this world every single day, it’s hard. Sometimes I like taking projects on that are different and that are a challenge for me in a different way. As a creator, it is nice to have a different side of the brain do something else," Siriano said on the importance of brand collaborations.

The Christian Siriano x Transitions Collection provides eyeglass wearers with the opportunity to personalize unique glasses to help elevate their personal style -- thanks to the launch of four new style colors and six style mirror options.

"We were already working on Resort 2018 which is kind of inspired by vintage old advertisements for Barbie. And then we were working with this color palette, and we got this project [with Transitions] and it was so exciting because a lot of the mirrored lenses have these pink, purple and iridescent colors," Siriano explained on incorporating the new lenses into his latest Resort collection. "It all kind of made sense, which is why it was a perfect match. I wanted to make sure that the pieces still felt like they made sense in the collection and that they were playful and whimsical."

Christian Siriano recently made headlines for bringing Whoopi Goldberg as a date to the CFDA awards. The designer dressed the icon in a custom head-to-toe hot pink suit with a matching hat.

"It was so funny - I was like “Whoopi do you want to go to the CFDA’s with me?” and she was like “Yes!” I said “Would you wear a hot pink suit?” and she said, “Baby, for you I would!” It was so genius and “I said are you sure?!” and she said, “yeah, I’ll see you there!" "There was no fitting because she’s so busy. It was amazing and she looked so fabulous. It was such a moment! Whoopi's been around a really long time and she’s done a million things but she was really excited! We had an awesome time - she was the best date!"

"It was so funny to watch women like Naomi Campbell run up to Whoopi like she was God! It was interesting because people love her and you kind of forget that. Even security guards were moving people out of the way for Whoopi -meanwhile, Kendall [Jenner] was right next to us, they didn’t care! It was just cool to see."
