Kelsey Grammer explains why his older kids got 'lost in the shuffle'

Kelsey Grammerwas 29 when he welcomed his first child. In November 2016, at the age of 61, he became a father for the seventh time. Now 63, the six-time Emmy winner says he’s enjoying the parenting experience more than ever. The reason: he doesn’t have to stress about his career.

“You don’t have to worry about it the same way as when you’re 30 and you have a kid,” Grammer told Us Weekly and other reporters at the Hollywood Salutes Israel event in L.A. on Sunday, June 10. The Frasier alum admitted that when he was getting started in Hollywood there was “a greater sort of energy or angst about ‘Am I going to make it?’” and that affected his family life. “Your kids get a little lost in that shuffle,” he revealed. “And you end up regretting it.”

Grammer and his wife, Kayte Walsh, are parents of Faith, 5, Kelsey Gabriel, 3, and 19-month-old Auden James. He is also father of Mason, 16, Jude, 13, Greer, 26, and Spencer, 34, from previous relationships.

Though it’s safe to assume Grammer can afford a team of nannies, he gushed that his wife of seven years prefers to do everything herself. “We don’t actually have help of a significant level because she’s got that thing,” he shared. “She says, ‘I don’t want to wake up and say, ‘I got this. I want to have it.’” At the moment, the former flight attendant has her hands full with the baby. “My youngest son James, he’s talking. He’s walking,” said Grammer. “He’s the first of this last batch that actually eats all the time. He crawls across the floor to get other people’s food so that seems to be his niche right now. Consumption!”

James’ siblings, meanwhile, “discover things every day,” raved Grammer, recalling how Gabriel recently watched him perform music from Beauty and the Beast at the Hollywood Bowl in May. “I hadn’t planned on him coming. I didn’t think he’d have the concentration for it and he was absolutely transfixed,” said Grammer. “And the next night, my daughter [Faith] came with me and she was just going to sit backstage but as she heard the music she said, ‘I have to go out there. I have to go out and see it!’”

Though the actor exhausted from his kids’ 5 a.m. wake-up calls, he calls the energy at his home “magnificent.”
