Russell Crowe looks unrecognizable in first event in months

Updated

Is that you, Russell Crowe?

The Oscar-winning actor stepped out for his first official public appearance in months on Tuesday, and we barely recognized him with his massive salt-and-pepper beard and fuller figure.

Crowe appeared in Rome, Italy, on Tuesday to unveil "Il Gladiatore In Concerto" ("The Gladiator in Concert"), which is a live musical experience centered around his Academy Award-winning 2000 epic, "Gladiator."

Rocking a black Ralph Lauren polo shirt, blue jeans and blue running sneakers, the 54-year-old actor was all smiles as he posed in front of a poster and interacted with media. At one point, he held up an A.S Roma football scarf above his head with a giant grin on his face.

The event premieres officially on Wednesday night, and Crowe took to Twitter to reveal that it will be the first time he's seen "Gladiator" in nearly two decades.

"Tonight I’ll watch Gladiator for the first time since the year 2000," he tweeted. "First time ever, I’ll be one of 350 extremely lucky people in the Colosseum, in Rome, with a live orchestra, choir and [Lisa Gerrard]. I cant seem to remember the ending... hope it’s a happy one!"

Crowe recently finalized his divorce from ex-wife Danielle Spencer, who he married in 1998 and initially split from in 2013. He turned heads back in April of this year by holding a so-called "The Art of Divorce" auction through Sotheby's, which involved Crowe selling off a ton of personal items and memorabilia in order to finance the divorce. The event raised over $3.7 million and was held on his 54th birthday.
