Why Martin Short and Steve Martin refuse to joke about Donald Trump

Martin Short and Steve Martin recently released their highly anticipated Netflix special called “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life”-- but one thing is noticeably missing from their lineup of jokes: President Trump.

The pair has intentionally steered clear of politics and the president according to a new interview with The Daily Beast.

"Steve and I have great respect for the fact that we don’t just want a liberal audience," Short told the outlet. "So you want the audience to feel that this is, in a way, a safe zone. A zone where they’re not going to be made to feel like a jerk because they voted one way."

Many comedians on the late night circuit, like Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert, touch on Trump’s presidency several times a week -- but Short has no interest in doing so.

Short told The Daily Beast that, although he deliberately doesn’t mention the president, that doesn’t mean he supports him.

"As far as the Trump presidency, I wouldn’t even call it a presidency," Short said. "It’s an asterisk. It’s a typo. I mean, every day it’s worse."

The Netflix special focuses on Martin Short and Steve Martin mocking one another in lieu of talking politics.

Short also noted that he doesn’t find President Trump funny.

"Some people find him hilarious. I don’t find it hilarious, but you can’t say it’s dull," he said. "There’s nothing credible about Donald Trump."
