Benjamin Glazer talks first kiss with Katy Perry during 'American Idol' audition: 'I was a tad bit uncomfortable'

The two-night season opener of the hit series American Idol featured plenty of hopeful talent and a new panel of judges consisting of Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry. One standout moment of the premiere came in the form of 19-year-old Benjamin Glaze, who didn’t walk away with a golden ticket but shared his first kiss with Perry on national television.

After explaining to the judges that one of the perks of working as a cashier of an electronics store is meeting the “cute girls” that come in. After explaining that he’s never been in a relationship and that he would never kiss a girl without dating her first, Perry motioned for Glaze to come over to the judges’ table.

She stuck out his face toward him, to which Glazer replied, “One on the cheek?” The two touched cheeks, but Perry asked for another, sneaking a kiss on his lips. “Katy!” he exclaimed. “You didn’t!”

Perry later tweeted about the audition, posting a gif of Minnie Mouse planting a smooch on Mickey.

In an interview with The New York Times, Glazer discussed that while he did not feel sexually harassed, he felt “a tad bit” uncomfortable: “Would I have done it if she said, ‘Would you kiss me?’ No, I would have said no,” he said. “I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.”

On a positive note, the audition drew attention to Glazer’s music and he’s hopeful for his first real kiss, which he discussed with his friends back home in Oklahoma. “They agreed with me that it didn’t really count,” he said. “It was lip contact versus a romantic situation with someone you care about. That’s what a real first kiss is.”
