What is an 'inclusion rider'? Frances McDormand's Oscars acceptance speech explained
Frances McDormand shook Dolby Theatre Sunday night with a rousing acceptance speech for Best Actress, in which she highlighted all 2018 women nominees.
But one phrase had audiences totally baffled. McDormand ended her speech with two words: Inclusion rider.
People on Twitter scrambled to find an answer, with some even speculating she might have meant "inclusion writer" or "inclusion, write her."
What the actress was actually referencing, though, was a legal rider, which is an attachment or amendment applied to a legal document in order to modify it without rewriting it. McDormand was likely suggesting industry folks attach an "inclusion rider" to stipulate gender and racial representation in productions.
