'Law & Order: SVU' actress Diane Neal is running for Congress

The actress who portrays Casey Novak on "Law & Order: SVU" is seeking a seat on Congress.

Diane Neal, 42, announced on Tuesday that she is running for the 19th Congressional District seat as an independent in New York.

"Ok, so it's ON!!! But I'm doing with nearly no staff, no donations (yet), with no party," she wrote on Twitter. "Website will be up later today (fingers crossed) and all ready to go. But goal is bigger than parties. Goal is no negativity. Goal is HIGH ROAD all the way."

In order to secure the spot on the November ballot, Neal will need 3,500 signatures.

Her campaign slogan was advertised as "Empathy & Reason. Diane Neal for Congress."

In an interview with The Daily Freeman, Neal described her political affiliations.

"I'm a little Libertarian, I'm a lot liberal, mostly progressive, but I have this amazing ability to be able to take really complicated policy and break it down into edible sound bites, which is something most progressive liberals cannot do."

The Virginia native starred in 113 episodes of "SVU" and had additional roles on series like "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans."
