Dwayne Johnson opens up about his mom's suicide attempt: 'To this day, she has no recollection of it'

Filming an emotional episode of "Ballers" brought up some painful memories for Dwayne Johnson.

After shooting a scene about suicide, it "got me thinkin' bout how many of us have been affected by suicide of our friends, family," Johnson wrote on Instagram before revealing his mother's own failed suicide attempt.

It happened when Johnson was 15 years old, and had he not intervened, his life would have changed forever.

"She got outta the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic," Johnson recalled. "Big rigs and cars swerving outta the way not to hit her. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road."

He continued, "What's crazy about that suicide attempt is to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn't."

The actor is still shaken by the harrowing experience, noting that he "didn't like" filming a "Ballers" scene that resurfaced those memories. "But it did [remind me] that we always gotta do our best to really pay attention when people are in pain," he wrote. "Help ‘em thru it, get ‘em talkin’ about the struggle and remind ‘em that they’re not alone."

Now, Johnson's mom, Ata, is grandmother to his two daughters -- and another is on the way.

"We got lucky that day when I was 15 and that ain’t always the case," he said.
