Donald Trump Jr. accuses Meryl Streep of 'sickening hypocrisy' on sexual misconduct

As Meryl Streep and other women attending the Golden Globes stage a silent protest against sexual harassment in Hollywood on Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. sent out a tweet condemning the actress for her “sickening hypocrisy” when it comes to her friendships with men accused of abuse, namely Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein.

“Not only did Meryl Streep call Harvey a god but she gave a standing ovation to child rapist roman Polanski at the Oscars,” Trump Jr. tweeted. “She tries to be a moral compas [sic] for others… No thanks.”

The president’s son attached a Snopes article posted last year after Streep gave an impassioned speech against Trump at the Golden Globes. The article notes a video from the 2003 Oscars, when Roman Polanski won Best Director for “The Pianist.” After Harrison Ford announced Polanski’s victory, a shot of the crowd showed Streep giving him a standing ovation. Polanski was not in attendance to receive the award, as he fled the U.S. in 1978 just before he was to be sentenced after pleading guilty to statutory rape.

The video was passed around by Trump supporters following Streep’s Globes speech as evidence of celebrities’ perceived hypocrisy when it comes to sexual harassment. More recently, a right-wing guerrilla artist named Sabo put up several posters in Los Angeles last month showing a picture of Streep with Weinstein, with Streep’s eyes covered by the phrase, “She Knew.”

But conservatives aren’t the only ones who have criticized Streep recently. Actress Rose McGowan, who has become one of the leading activists demanding accountability for Hollywood sexual abuse, criticized Streep after she announced that she and many other actresses would wear black at this year’s Golden Globes as an act of solidarity for abuse victims. McGowan criticized the act as an empty gesture, accusing them on Saturday of remaining silent while they “happily worked” for disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she referred to as the “Pig Monster.”

“You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change,” she tweeted. “I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”

Another actress who has pushed for industry reform, Amber Tamblyn, came to Streep’s defense, saying that she should be considered an ally and that it was “beneath” McGowan to attack her.

“You don’t have to support and stand with us, but we stand and support you,” Tamblyn said on Twitter. “You may take below the belt shots at us but we will not take them at you in return.”

Streep responded to McGowan’s criticism with a statement, saying that she did not know about Weinstein’s history of abuse while she was working with him.

“I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,” she said. “I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.”
