Jason Mitchell tells his grandfather's story in 'Mudbound'

Was it a coincidence or fate that one of the hottest new talents in Hollywood, Jason Mitchell, grew up in the area where his latest film, "Mudbound," was filmed?

Well, the actor stopped by Build Series NYC to discuss his latest role as a lead in the film, and he shared some personal stories that shed light on what inspired his performance.

"My grandfather fought in the Korean War, he didn't speak up as much because he wanted to stay alive, and now I can tell his story," he explained, before adding that he brought his grandfather to the red carpet at the New Orleans Film Festival.

The actor explained that "Mudbound" is a movie that holds no punches, and starts a dialogue on race and social climate uncertainties -- which, in our divided society right now, are important topics to discuss in pop culture.

"We are all bound for the mud sooner or later, the things that we fight over -- the things we judge each other over -- ultimately have us all in the same place," he explained of the meaning behind the film.

When it came to discussing the synergies and special bonds on the set, the actor hilariously revealed that he considers co-star Garrett Hedlund to be "like me, stuck in a white man's body."
