Kathie Lee Gifford is 'grappling' with Matt Lauer's 'Today' show termination: 'We're broken'

Kathie Lee Gifford had a spirit of forgiveness upon reacting to the news that her longtime colleague, Matt Lauer, had been fired from the Today show.

On Wednesday morning, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb emotionally announced at the top the morning show that Lauer -- who started on Today in 1994 -- was let go from NBC after allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace."

During the last hour of Today, the 64-year-old TV personality admitted that she was still "grappling" with Lauer's termination, and started to compare it to when news broke in 1997 that her husband, Frank Gifford, had cheated on her.

"I don't feel that Matt has betrayed us," Gifford said. "When I found out my husband had betrayed me, you question your own judgment. 'Was everything a lie?'  I think we have to fight against that."

She went on to talk about her late husband, who died in 2015, and how she learned from that difficult time in their marriage.

"There is no bad time. There was a wonderful man who was an adviser to me and Frank through my lifetime and I was upset and hurt, like I'm sure Matt's family is," she said. "He said, 'If you can't forgive your husband, forgive your children's father.' The same person, that's the one you love."

Gifford also admitted that she reached out to Lauer, 59, upon hearing of his termination. "I texted him this morning and I said, 'I adore you,'" she shared. "No one is perfect in this world. We need now is forgiveness and mercy for one another."

She then showed support for his family and the woman who is accusing Lauer of sexual misconduct. "I send out my love to the person who came forward. May God heal that person," she began. "I send it to Matt his children and his wife and heal."

Who will replace Matt Lauer?
Ann Curry -- Viewers were shocked and stunned when Curry was tearfully released from "Today" on air in 2012. According to reports, she had a strained relationship with Lauer, who wanted her dismissed. CEO Steve Burke allegedly told Lauer ahead of the firing, “We need to sign you so we can do Ann," and top execs reportedly celebrated with a toast after she was fired. Although it seems unlikely that the network would potentially rehash old wounds by bringing her back, it could be a popular choice with viewers, many of whom have already taken to Twitter to campaign for her resinstatement.
Megyn Kelly -- When it was first announced that she would leave Fox News for NBC, there were multiple reports of a power struggle to determine her time slot. She's now situated two hours after Lauer's 7 AM spot, but amid all the turmoil, it's possible that she'll manage to snag that top seat.
Craig Melvin -- "Today" weekend co-host Craig Melvin certainly stands a strong stance of the big promotion to Lauer's top slot. He's already a familiar face among viewers, but he lacks the negative baggage of Ann Curry or Megyn Kelly.
Willie Geist -- The "Sunday Today" host has filled in for Lauer on multiple occasions. He's seen all across the network's programming, from MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to NBC News and NBC Sports.
Anderson Cooper -- After the drama with Ann Curry unfolded, leading many viewers to express a distaste for Lauer, rumors floated in 2013 that Anderson Cooper had been approached by NBC about replacing him. However, NBC News exec Alex Wallace at the time dismissed the claim, saying, "We want [Lauer] in the ‘Today’ show anchor chair for many years to come."
Keith Olbermann -- He spent 20 years as a sports reporter before moving into political journalism at MSNBC. Just days ago, he announced he would be ending his GQ web show "The Resistance," explaining that he wanted to retire from political commentary: "No illness. No scandal. No firing. Just I've said what I've had to say," he said. However, he didn't say he wanted to actually retire, leaving open the possibility of returning via a different type of program.
Tamron Hall -- This one's pretty unlikely. Hall decided herself to leave the show, much to the disappointment of many viewers and Hall's own colleagues. She reportedly felt burned by treatment of NBC execs, who booted her from her 9 AM time slot in favor of Megyn Kelly. She could return if there's no bad blood, but there almost certainly is.
Carson Daly -- He's already on the NBC payroll as the host of "The Voice," and some took to Twitter on Wednesday to campaign for him to slide into Lauer's seat.

Gifford concluded, "We're broken and we need someone to put us back together. It is so possible, I am living proof of it. I didn't mean to go to church but sometimes, you gotta go to church."

After emotionally breaking the news earlier in the morning with Guthrie, Kotb further opened up to Gifford about how she was feeling about the allegations against Lauer. "The processing is gonna take a lot of time and it's that feeling we were talking about and I think everyone home has felt this way," she noted. "You think, 'What? How does that make sense?' You can't figure it out overnight."

Lauer's firing comes one week after Charlie Rose was terminated from CBS This Morning after eight women came forward alleging that they were sexually harassed by the 75-year-old newsman while working on his PBS show. CBS later reported that three women who worked at the network also accused Rose of sexual misconduct.
