Meghan Markle is latest in line of Americans who turned royal

She’s more red, white and blue than your average blue-blood.

Actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement Monday morning, setting the way for her to become a princess in Britain’s ruling house of Windsor.

But Markle, a 36-year-old Los Angeles native known for her humanitarian work and role in “Suits,” is not the first American whose accomplishments outside the world of Old World aristocracy have impressed a royal.

As stilted courtships in the shadow of crowns have relaxed and made way for marrying “commoners,” a number of Yankee men and women have left their democratic homeland for abroad.

Wallis Simpson:

Harry’s great-great-uncle caused one of the biggest stirs in recent royal history when he left the throne for life with American Wallis Simpson.

Edward VIII was king for a brief period in 1930s Britain when his intended marriage to Simpson, a two-time divorcee, caused a crisis because of his additional role as the head of the Church of England.

Edward abdicated in favor of his brother George VI, Queen Elizabeth’s father, and married Simpson after he became instead the Duke of Windsor.

Both the Duke and the new Duchess of Windsor visited Nazi Germany after their wedding in 1937, and were accused of being Nazi sympathizers.

Grace Kelly

Markle is also not the first American actress who left the world of the silver screen for one of silver sceptres.

Grace Kelly was only 26-years-old when she retired from a career that saw her play in films such as “High Noon” to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

Their elaborate 1956 wedding was also dubbed the “Wedding of the Century,” a title later given to the 21st century nuptials of Harry’s brother Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Kelly died in a traffic crash in 1982, after what doctors said was a stroke that caused the car to veer off the road.

Queen Noor

Americans’ travels to love with foreign dignitaries has extended beyond Europe, with Queen Noor, originally born Lisa Najeeb Halaby, playing an important role in modern-day Jordan.

Noor was 26 in 1978 when she became the fourth wife of King Hussein, who ruled the country for decades until his death in 1999.

The Princeton University graduate, an architect by training who met the king while working for an air services company, has become a consistent voice for women’s rights in the Middle East and Arab world.

Noor is not related to the current king of Jordan, Abdullah II, who is a son from Hussein’s second marriage.

Chris O’Neill

The list of Americans marrying more minor royals includes a good mixture of princes and princesses, though O’Neill is now representing American men among the crown heads of Europe.

A 33-year-old dual American-British citizen educated in London and the U.S., O’Neill worked in finance before his romance with Princess Madeleine of Sweden.

O’Neill, however, is not technically a prince, as he has retained his American citizenship rather than become Swedish and join the court presided over by Madeleine’s father Carl XVI Gustaf.

He continues working as a businessman and since the marriage the family has lived in New York, Stockholm and London.

Arianna Austin

Some U.S. citizens have found their royal loves through high society circles, though sometimes a nightclub is just as good.

Arianna Austin, 33, first met Joel Kanonnen at Pearl Nightclub in Washington D.C. in 2005, before beginning to date him and eventually learning that he was a prince of Ethiopia.

Makonnen says that one of his friends was the one who ended up telling Austin about his royal heritage, as the great-grandson of the eastern African country’s last emperor Haile Selassie, who was deposed in the 1970s.

The pair married in September in a Maryland ceremony that included crowns and capes, according to the New York Times, which reported both continue to work.

“Old World aristocracy met New World charm,” their wedding website says of the way they came together.
