American Music Awards: Kelly Clarkson, P!nk open show with tribute to first responders

Kelly Clarkson and P!nk opened Sunday night's American Music Awards with a tribute to those who have been affected by 2017's numerous disasters, from this year's hurricanes to the Las Vegas shooting. In their their first-ever joint performance, the two sang R.E.M's "Everybody Hurts" as images of first responders played behind them.

Jamie Foxx introduced the duo alongside his daughter, and personally thanked firefighters, police, and paramedics who "ran towards danger" as a number of first responders gathered on the stage beside him.

During the show, P!nk will also perform "Beautiful Trauma" off her her most recent album of the same name, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts when it was released on Oct. 13. Sunday marked her fifth AMA performance, with having previously taken the stage with "Most Girls" in 2001, "Trouble" in 2003, "Sober" in 2008 and "Try" in 2012.

Clarkson, a four-time AMA winner, last performed at the awards show in 2012 with a medley of “Miss Independent," “Since U Been Gone,” “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and “Catch My Breath.” Her new album "Meaning of Life" was released on Oct. 27.

The 45th annual AMAs are being broadcast on ABC from L.A.'s Microsoft Theater.
